The company is a subsidiary of AngloGold Ashanti, an international gold producer headquartered in South Africa, with operations in more than ten countries, in four continents. The mine is situated in the Lake Victoria Gold fields of Northwestern Tanzania, only about 85 km’s from Mwanza City and 20 km’s Southeast of the nearest point of Lake Victoria. OBJECTIVE OF THE ROLE
The primary role is to produce risk mitigated mine designs and schedules for the underground mine to meet budget physicals in a manner consistent with the Company’s Vision and Values.
ROLE ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Development of plans to support the execution of strategies to optimize the productivity and profitability of underground mining operations this includes horizons covering strategic options, life of mine, annual budget and the monthly schedule.
- Build organizational capability within the planning workgroup (people & organizational structure) to successfully deliver the Underground Mining Department budget and Life of Mines plan.
- Deliver physicals schedule and cost schedule for the underground mine with accuracy commensurate with the confidence of the reserve or resource for the full asset life.
- Support delivery of all work packages related to the annual Mineral Reserve Reporting for underground operations.
- Develop integrated systems for the mining technical department that align superintendent level processes to enable effective work planning, efficient and safe operations, and comprehensive performance monitoring.
- Drive value creation across the mining department by implementing continuous improvement initiatives in line with the full asset potential program.
- Create standards, procedures, guidelines for all tasks carried out by the UG Planning team and ensure they are reviewed, updated and document controlled.
- Participating in mining engineering studies includes initiating and participating in engineering and planning studies to realize opportunities and solve operational challenges.
- Ensure safety, health, and environmental compliance this includes promoting a safe and healthy work environment by modeling and applying standard work procedures. Identify and manage risks and hazards in the workplace, conduct regular safety audits and investigate incidents to implement corrective actions, while ensuring strict compliance with applicable regulations.
- Develop and maintain constructive relationships with colleagues, business partners, regulators, government and other stakeholders, utilizing these relationships to successfully resolve issues if, or when, they arise.
- Ensure alignment between mineral reserves, production strategy and planning requirements to ensure reporting aligns with industry standards such as S-K 1300.
- Accountable for applying management and people practices.
- Report performance to plan, identify and rectify variances.
Role Outputs
- Implement and manage strategies to optimize the delivery of mine plans (designs and schedules) for execution which maximize the value of the underground orebody, including the adoption of innovative equipment, technology and work methods.
- Build an appropriately structured, capable team with the skills required to sustainably operate.
- Develop capital budget proposals as required, including the business case for each investment this must be done with the assistance of the business Improvement and commercial superintendent to facilitate a consistent approach
- Analysis of the optimum mining methods, cutoff grade, design, sequencing, infrastructure and equipment requirements to determine the economics of each mining or study area evaluate against the strategic objectives to determine the need for further optimization or termination of further work
- Conduct annual performance appraisal as well as provide ongoing one-on-one and teamwork feedback
- Identify direct report’s development needs, develop and enable them to effectively manage the business processes, workgroup, contractors, assets and other resources for which they are accountable
ROLE REQUIREMENTS
Education & Qualification
- Degree in Mining Engineering
- Professional Registration with ERB
Experience
- At least 8 years operational experience in an underground mine
- Experience in mine design and scheduling software such as Deswik, Studio UG, EPS, Ventsim, Vulcan, Mine Stope Optimizer (MSO)
Knowledge & Skills
- Broad range of leadership, managerial and technical skills relevant to large scale bulk and selective underground mining
- Sound understanding of the mining value and risk drivers in the business unit
- Good communication skills
- Technical excellence in mine planning
- Able to work with minimum supervision
