OBJECTIVE OF THE ROLE

Provides specialist geotechnical engineering support and services for underground operations and projects across the AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) African Business Unit. This role acts as a tactical advisor on rock mechanics, hydrology, and hydrogeology, managing geotechnical risk and embedding within site teams through routine deployments to optimize local technical capability.

ROLE ACCOUNTABILITIES

• Geotechnical Design & Systems: Execute tactical open pit designs and reviews. Enforce Group data systems for collection, management (GeotAgg), and validation (PowerBi).
• Operational Assurance: Support technical compliance audits and reviews. Assist sites in creating actionable roadmaps to resolve data collection or structural model deviations.
• Site Deployment & Secondment: Act in seconded site roles for extended periods to directly drive workforce development, technical capability transfer, and operational compliance.
• Risk & Business Planning: Deliver functional data inputs to short- and medium-term plans to ensure ground control efficacy and regional asset optimization.
• Training & Coaching: Provide functional training to site personnel on data management systems, GMRi, and GRiP implementation.

ROLE REQUIREMENTS

Education & Qualification

• Bachelor’s degree Geology, Mining, Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related discipline (post-graduate qualification is highly desirable).

Experience, Knowledge and Skills

• At least 8 years modern mechanised operational (onsite) mining experience (ie jumbo development/ longhole open stoping, QAQC, risk management and data collection)

• Has written/ developed Ground Control Management Plans (GCMP) and Trigger Action Response Procedures (TARP)
• Has developed and verified ground support designs for underground development
• Exposure to paste backfill and Life of Mine (LOM) sequencing is desirable
• Has coached / developed junior engineers
• Willingness to travel extensively
