AngloGold Ashanti (Ghana) Limited, Obuasi Gold Mine is currently near completion of the redevelopment phase to become a modern, efficient and long-term profitable operation. The underground mining operation has been fully mechanized and designed to produce up to an average maximum of 5,000 t/day of ore mined.

OBJECTIVE OF THE ROLE

 

  • Provide high-quality technical design, detailed 3D modelling, and drafting support for SMPP works, reporting to the Clerks of Works (Mechanical) – Mining Construction.
  • Produce accurate, detailed, and high-quality technical drawings to support the planning, execution, and completion of mining construction projects.
  • Translate conceptual designs, engineering specifications, and field data into precise technical drawings that comply with applicable industry standards and project requirements.
  • Ensure all drawings align with defined construction scopes and incorporate environmental management principles (ISO 14001) and occupational health and safety standards (OHSAS 18001).
  • Collaborate with electrical and civil draftsmen, Mine Captains, Clerks of Works, project engineers, project managers, and construction teams to ensure accuracy, efficiency, and integrity of deliverables.
  • Control the systematic revision and management of engineering drawings and documentation so they remain current with site conditions, regulatory requirements, and project developments.

 

ROLE ACCOUNTABILITIES

 

  • Conduct risk assessments for all tasks, ensure risks are controlled before and during execution, report all incidents, and ensure investigations and corrective actions are completed on time.
  • Achieve full compliance with set occupational health and safety KPIs and target zero incidents and injuries in areas of involvement or jurisdiction.
  • Fulfil environmental obligations and performance requirements, hold formal meetings, enforce environmental work procedures, investigate incidents, prepare reports with recommendations, attend training, and act on complaints and suggestions.
  • Prepare, revise, and verify mining construction drawings, including detailed layouts and general arrangement drawings, to meet AGAG requirements, design specifications, and construction standards for infrastructure, installations, and upgrade works.
  • Update technical and mechanical drawings to reflect design changes and site conditions and ensure approved versions are used for fabrication and construction works.
  • Engage with contractors in line with procedures and apply quality assurance to ensure timely delivery of mechanical, part, and fabrication drawings from AGA to contractors.
  • Apply quality control processes to collect and manage required data and monitor performance against drafting and documentation standards.
  • Maintain current knowledge of Minerals and Mining (Health and Safety and Technical) Regulations 2012 (L.I. 2182) and Mineral and Mining (Explosives) Regulations 2012 (L.I. 2177), and adhere to internal occupational health and safety standards, management system requirements, managerial instructions, codes of practice, Labour Act, and AGA and HR policies.
  • Create and maintain drawing registers tracking drawing numbers, titles, revisions, dates, and status; ensure compliance with company document control procedures and ISO requirements; assign unique drawing numbers per company standards.
  • Interpret engineering sketches, specifications, and design instructions; convert rough sketches and design ideas into precise 2D and 3D CAD drawings; interpret dimensions, tolerances, fits, and surface finish requirements; incorporate material specifications; and perform tolerance analysis to ensure dimensional accuracy.
  • Drive timely delivery of drawings to align with project schedules and prevent delays due to drafting errors or omissions.
  • Report on the status of drafting deliverables, highlighting progress, potential delays, and issues related to accuracy or quality to ensure transparent communication with stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with project teams to review and refine drawing standards, improve quality and efficiency, participate in feedback loops, and suggest improvements to drafting practices and processes.
  • Prepare periodic reports identifying opportunities to enhance methods and improve efficiencies within mining construction drafting activities.
  • Foster a culture of accountability by taking ownership of drafting tasks and ensuring designs comply with regulatory and project requirements, while maintaining consistent team performance and cross-functional relationships.

 

ROLE REQUIREMENTS

 

Education & Qualification

 

  • BSc Mechanical or equivalent Mechanical Engineering degree.
  • PMP certification is an advantage.

 

Experience

 

  • Minimum of 1 to 3 years’ experience in mining or construction operations.
  • Preferably owner’s team, multi-disciplined, design, construction and commissioning experience, with underground mining (SMPP) experience.

 

Knowledge & Skills

 

  • Understanding of key underground mining practices and construction projects with demonstrated ability to apply this knowledge to optimise cost and performance.
  • Ability to interpret engineering sketches, specifications, and design instructions and convert them into precise 2D and 3D CAD drawings.
  • Ability to interpret dimensions, tolerances, fits, and surface finish requirements; understanding of material specifications; ability to perform tolerance analysis and ensure dimensional accuracy.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with financial and data interpretation/analysis capability.
  • Good communication and writing skills, including excellent verbal and written communication and report writing skills in English.
  • Skills in business improvement and managing change; strategic exposure to business is an advantage.
  • Ability to engage with different disciplines across workforce levels including management; excellent negotiation and consultation skills; conflict management; mentorship and coaching.
  • Demonstrated capacity to interpret data and action sound short-term tactical decisions; commercial acumen relevant to the role.
  • Safety (basic application): understands key elements of site safety systems, can lead team-based risk assessments, conduct behavioural observations, and participate in reviewing safety system elements such as practices and procedures.
  • Project management (basic application): understands AGA project management standards, has applied them in a minor project to conceptual level, and can lead a minor project while interacting with test work and engineering consultant service providers.
  • Innovation (basic application): identifies and proposes modifications to existing processes to deliver better performance and service.
  • Ability to build a disciplined team to deliver planned work to defined standards; manage personal development; build effective working relationships; build trust and accountability; and maximise performance and achievement of results.
