OBJECTIVE OF THE ROLE
- The Technician, Mechanical – MI reports to the Supervisor, Mechanical – Mining Infrastructure and is responsible for the safe, reliable, and efficient inspection, maintenance, troubleshooting, overhaul, testing, and commissioning of diesel-powered generator sets, with particular emphasis on Caterpillar and Cummins generators.
- The role executes planned, predictive, preventive, corrective, and breakdown maintenance activities to maximize equipment availability, reliability, and operational performance in support of uninterrupted mining operations.
- The incumbent conducts detailed mechanical inspections, diagnoses engine and auxiliary system faults, performs engine overhauls, repairs and component replacements, and verifies equipment performance through testing and commissioning in accordance with OEM specifications.
- The role contributes to asset reliability, operational excellence, cost-effective maintenance, and continuous improvement by applying OEM best practices, maintaining accurate maintenance records, and promoting a culture of Zero Harm, quality workmanship, and equipment reliability.
ROLE ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Conduct risk assessments prior to task execution and comply with all safety regulations and procedures.
- Participate in workplace inspections and safety observations, report hazards and incidents, and ensure corrective actions are implemented.
- Comply with the Environmental Management Plan, prevent spillages and contamination, report environmental incidents and deviations, and follow environmental procedures during operations.
- Work closely with supervisors, operators, and contractors, and participate in training and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Perform planned, predictive, preventive, corrective, and breakdown maintenance on diesel-powered generator sets.
- Carry out overhauls of diesel engines, including dismantling, inspection, measurement, repair, reassembly, and commissioning in accordance with OEM specifications.
- Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical faults on diesel engines, alternators, and generator auxiliary systems using OEM diagnostic tools and service manuals.
- Inspect, repair, and replace engine components including injectors, turbochargers, water pumps, oil pumps, and fuel system components.
- Perform maintenance on generator support systems including fuel, lubrication, cooling, air intake, exhaust, starting, and charging systems.
- Interpret technical drawings, OEM manuals, schematics, and maintenance procedures to execute repair work to the required quality standards.
- Complete routine inspections and condition monitoring to identify developing equipment defects and recommend corrective actions before failures occur.
- Record maintenance activities, equipment history, measurements, inspection findings, and parts usage accurately in the CMMS.
- Maintain equipment reliability by performing root cause failure analysis and implementing approved reliability improvement initiatives.
- Ensure all maintenance work complies with AngloGold Ashanti engineering standards, OEM specifications, statutory regulations, and quality requirements.
- Support emergency breakdown response activities to restore equipment safely and within agreed response times.
- Maintain housekeeping standards in workshops and work areas while ensuring all tools, lifting equipment, and measuring instruments are used safely and correctly.
- Participate in shutdown planning and continuous improvement initiatives to improve equipment availability and reliability.
- Execute work effectively to prevent rework and reduce waste.
- Ensure timely execution of maintenance and operational tasks.
- Support operators to operate equipment within safe working limits and identify and escalate potential equipment failures.
- Report to the Mechanical Supervisor on all operational and maintenance issues.
- Stop work or equipment if unsafe conditions exist and report immediately.
ROLE REQUIREMENTS
Education & Qualification
- Technician II Certificate or equivalent, or
- Associate degree or technical diploma in Engineering Technology or related field, or
- City and Guilds certificate part II
- MINCOM certification will be an added advantage
Experience
- Minimum of two years' post-qualification experience in the maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and overhaul of industrial diesel-powered generator sets with particular emphasis on Caterpillar and Cummins generators.
- Proven hands-on experience in the complete overhaul and maintenance of diesel generator engines and their auxiliary systems.
- Experience in power generation, mining, or heavy industrial environments, including planned, preventive, corrective, and breakdown maintenance, as well as generator testing and commissioning.
- Experience in diagnosing mechanical failures using OEM service manuals, CAT Electronic Technician, Cummins INSITE, and other diagnostic equipment will be an added advantage.
