AngloGold Ashanti (Ghana) Limited, Obuasi Gold Mine is currently near completion of the redevelopment phase to become a modern, efficient and long-term profitable operation. The underground mining operation has been fully mechanized and designed to produce up to an average maximum of 5,000 t/day of ore mined.

OBJECTIVE OF THE ROLE
- The Redevelopment Project is transitioning to steady state operations with the aim of achieving 5,000 tonnes per day processing by leveraging technology and world class systems for mechanized underground mining.
- The Shiftboss role is a regulatory mandated position that leads Quality Assurance and Control, ensures compliance with mining and related legislation, and risk manages underground ore extraction activities to required standards.
- Assess risks for all tasks, ensure controls are in place before and during execution, act on corrective actions, conduct Critical Control reviews, Supervisor workplace visits and inspections, Positive Hazards Observation and Reporting, and coordinate project execution activities within assigned mining blocks.
ROLE ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Demonstrate and uphold AngloGold Ashanti’s values in all decisions, actions, and professional conduct.
- Allocate a minimum of 90% of time to actively support full compliance with site safety requirements and foster a culture of zero harm.
- Maintain a minimum of 90% underground presence to support operational effectiveness, validate designs, and contribute to continuous improvement with execution teams.
- Ensure compliance with project planning standards underground through application of project documentation, risk assessments, and Project Work Instructions for safe and effective delivery.
- Develop and maintain constructive stakeholder relationships to collaboratively deliver against project timelines and schedules.
- Participate in planning forums and coordination meetings to integrate project activities with operational schedules, mine planning, and infrastructure development priorities.
- Provide inputs to planning, review, and execution tracking of the Cote D’or capital projects and infrastructure.
- Deliver vertical and lateral development underground within approved budget targets, specified timeframes, costs, and related KPIs.
- Enforce necessary QAQC, risk management, and contractor engagement processes and procedures for underground vertical and lateral development.
- Drive implementation of projects and strategies and sustain a culture of accountability and continuous improvement within the Projects department.
- Provide resources and expertise to develop the team to deliver the annual budget according to role and level of authority.
- Support business improvement initiatives and contribute to project related improvements that enhance compliance, efficiency, and project delivery performance.
- Consult departmental guidelines and procedures for safe execution of project timelines and integrate weekly schedules for project execution.
- Remain informed on the Capital AFE process and strategic and business planning deliverables, provide inputs to weekly schedules and daily reporting templates, and incorporate void management, ventilation, ground support, geotechnical assessments, and emergency planning inputs.
ROLE REQUIREMENTS
Education & Qualification
- BSc or Diploma in Mining Engineering or equivalent operational experience.
- Underground Shiftboss Certificate of Competency or equivalent, as required by the Minerals Commission (Chief Inspector of Mines).
Experience
- Two to five years operational experience in underground mining with at least two years at supervisory level.
- Exposure to alliance-style contractor–owner environments and cross-functional collaboration.
- Demonstrated experience and knowledge of fundamental underground vertical and lateral developments.
Knowledge & Skills
- Familiarity with mining software.
- Understanding of project scopes, sequencing, and cost alignment within operational schedules.
- Detailed knowledge of the mining operations value chain.
- Capacity to interpret data and action sound tactical decisions.
- Safety (advanced application): identify and interpret safety risks, resolve emerging issues, and ensure appropriate focus and resources to achieve safety objectives.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills to support planning discussions and documentation.
- Analytical mindset with attention to design accuracy, compliance, and execution requirements.
- Ability to foster a team environment, promote collaboration and teamwork, develop others, and communicate prolifically.
- Ability to build and maintain effective cross-functional working relationships.
- Problem solving and analysis with a drive for results.
- Ability to work underground as required, including travel between work areas.
- Capable of using a computer for extended periods in an office environment.
- Physically fit to meet site medical and functional capacity requirements.
- Valid Ghanaian manual driver’s licence (as required by site).
