AngloGold Ashanti (Ghana) Limited, Obuasi Gold Mine is currently near completion of the redevelopment phase to become a modern, efficient and long-term profitable operation. The underground mining operation has been fully mechanized and designed to produce up to an average maximum of 5,000 t/day of ore mined.

OBJECTIVE OF THE ROLE

 

The Specialist, Environmental Monitoring is accountable for implementing comprehensive environmental monitoring programs across the mine’s operational footprint and surrounding catchment communities. You will ensure adequate planning and real-time data collection for air and water quality, noise, dust, and blast monitoring to facilitate informed decision-making.

This role is critical in supporting Environmental Management System (EMS) processes to maintain the mine’s legal and social license to operate through rigorous inspections, incident reporting, and advisory functions.

 

 

ROLE ACCOUNTABILITIES

 

  • Monitoring & Data Management: Manage environmental quality monitoring contracts, pest control, and waste management (hazardous and non-hazardous). You will oversee the EQWin software, evaluate all generated data, and ensure sampling meets regulatory quality standards.
  • Inspections & Compliance: Lead environmental inspections and audits across various operational sites to ensure alignment with legislation and internal AGA standards.
  • Incident & Risk Management: Lead investigations for environmental incidents, implement emergency response procedures, and track corrective actions.
  • Land & Rehabilitation: Assist in managing rehabilitation projects, updating mine-wide liability estimates, and coordinating contractor activities.
  • Systems & Projects: Support the update of ISO 14001 procedures and lead field data collection for EIA/ESIA projects, providing technical guidance on permitting requirements.
  • Awareness: Deliver environmental inductions and educational programs to employees, contractors, and visitors.

 

 

ROLE REQUIREMENTS

 

Education & Qualification

  • Tertiary qualification in Environmental Management or a relevant Natural Science.
  • Minerals Commission HSE Officer certification and a valid driver’s license are mandatory.

 

Experience, Knowledge and Skills

  • A minimum of four (4) years in environmental management within a mining environment. Proven experience in waste/water management or natural resource conservation is required.
  • In-depth knowledge of environmental quality monitoring and ISO 14001 requirements.
  • Proficiency in Geographic Information System (GIS) software and advanced computer literacy.
  • Strong technical background in risk assessment and environmental management tools.
  • Excellent verbal and written English with the ability to interact effectively with government officials, contractors, and mine leadership.
