OBJECTIVE OF THE ROLE

• Ensure the safe and efficient operation, maintenance, and reliability of the KMS winding systems used to transport personnel, materials, and ore between surface and underground levels.
• Take accountability for the legal and statutory responsibilities of the KMS winding machinery operation and maintenance, including execution of statutory inspections and maintenance in compliance with Minerals and Mining Regulation L.I 2182 Sub section 394-433.
• Oversee the planning, execution, and continuous improvement of maintenance activities to maximize equipment uptime, ensure compliance with safety and environmental standards, support production targets, and maximize equipment availability in a sustainable and cost-effective manner while minimizing operational risks.

ROLE ACCOUNTABILITIES

• Assess risks for all tasks and ensure they are controlled before and during task execution.
• Report all incidents, support investigations, and ensure corrective actions are completed on time.
• Enforce rigorous safety standards across shaft and winder operations in line with regulatory requirements, company safety policies, and Safety Management System elements including inspections, audits, JHA, Planned Task Observations, workplace visits, and hazard reporting.
• Ensure compliance with safety leading indicators, Major Hazard Standards, HSE regulations, and mining and minerals regulations including L.I 2182.
• Identify safety training needs and support delivery of training to enable personnel to safely perform designated work.
• Adhere to the site Environmental Management Plan and ensure the team meets environmental obligations and performance requirements.
• Implement maintenance and operational activities in accordance with Government of Ghana conditions of approvals and the site's Aspect Register related to the section.
• Coordinate review of the Assets Register related to KMS Shaft and Logistics infrastructure.
• Investigate environmental incidents, report findings with recommendations, and act on employee environmental complaints and suggestions.
• Support the establishment of the KMS Winder Maintenance team required to execute the role.
• Gather information for reporting performance to the Engineering Manager - KMS and support recruitment and appointment of personnel in line with policy and localization objectives.
• Define roles and accountabilities of subordinates, prepare training and development plans, and ensure communication of policies and procedures for full understanding and compliance.
• Develop skills matrices, identify skill deficiencies, initiate corrective action, coordinate technical training, and support succession planning and Individual Development Plans.
• Provide subject matter input into shaft infrastructure design and constructability, ensuring compliance with AGA standards, Minerals and Mining Regulatory requirements, and international engineering standards.
• Review, approve, and sign off relevant refurbishment electrical and instrumentation infrastructure items, testing plans, commissioning plans, handover plans, manuals, records, drawings, specifications, and documents issued.
• Monitor refurbishment contractor and maintenance workforce performance to deliver works that meet cost, schedule, quality, and scope expectations.
• Control refurbishment priorities within a dynamic environment while maintaining safety, budget, schedule, and quality targets.
• Implement the approved organizational structure and develop systems for the Shaft and Winders section to support effective planning, safe work practices, performance monitoring, and continuous improvement.
• Schedule and manage inspections, repairs, and upgrades to maintain winder equipment reliability and safety.
• Plan, oversee, and execute preventive and corrective maintenance for winding equipment including drums, brakes, gearboxes, motors, ropes, electrical safety circuits, and systems.
• Develop and implement a comprehensive maintenance program for mechanical and electrical components of the winding system including motors, gearboxes, control systems, brakes, and safety devices.
• Conduct routine maintenance, detailed inspections, fault diagnosis, and troubleshooting on electrical and mechanical systems to minimize downtime and restore operation quickly.
• Monitor winding system performance including hoist speed, load capacity, and cycle times to identify optimization opportunities and improve efficiency and reliability.
• Develop and implement preventive and predictive maintenance activities including thermography, insulation resistance testing, EMT testing of wire ropes, and other statutory and condition monitoring tests.
• Develop emergency response procedures for winding systems and ensure team members are trained in response to power failure, equipment malfunction, emergency brakes, and communication systems.
• Maintain detailed maintenance, inspection, and performance records and prepare technical reports and updates for management.
• Manage inventory of critical spare parts and tools, and work with procurement to ensure timely ordering and availability of replacement parts and materials.
• Coordinate with electrical, control, instrumentation engineers, OEMs, consultants, mining supervisors, and operators to integrate winding systems effectively with underground operations and minimize impact on production.
• Coordinate the departmental budget, evaluate cost impacts, identify cost reduction initiatives, manage the department in line with the operational budget, and communicate relevant financial detail to subordinates.
• Execute work in a timely manner and verify that Shaft and Winders activities remain within the approved project schedule and critical milestones.
• Ensure operational risk assessments are completed prior to operations and reviewed through Management of Change processes when changes, alterations, or significant incidents occur.
• Manage proposed modifications to shaft and winding systems in accordance with legislative requirements and obtain final approval as required.
• Report directly to the Shaft & Logistics Superintendent or the Engineering Manager - KMS on issues and identify and execute improvement projects.
• Develop an asset management strategy and maintenance plans aligned to the Operations expected life of mine.
• Ensure the SAP asset maintenance management system is fully utilized in Shaft, Logistics, and Winder activities and that subordinates are competent in its use.
• Develop and maintain the KMS Winders Engineering Management Plan and provide input into WBS, budget, schedule, and construction work packs for refurbishment activities.
• Respond to Requests for Information and Technical Queries and review and approve relevant technical and non-technical documentation.
• Comply with relevant legislation, applicable codes, best practice, industry and AGAG standards, quality systems, policies, procedures, processes, and internal project requirements.
• Execute and oversee statutory and legal compliance activities including six-monthly winder rope recap, three-year winder rope replacement requirements, guide deceleration tests, dynamic winder tests, gravity wind, brake deceleration tests, NDT on sheave wheel profiles, fleet angle measurement, and EMT testing.
• Coordinate and chair regular Winder progress meetings, maintain meeting records and actions, and participate in cost and schedule reviews.
• Produce weekly, monthly, and quarterly reports on safety, cost, schedule, and quality and provide KPI status and feedback on contractor progress claims.
• Participate in audits, oversee witness testing and inspection regimes, and proactively identify and manage change to avoid cost, schedule, and quality issues.
• Continuously identify opportunities to improve cost, schedule, quality, and safety outcomes across engineering, mining, refurbishment, and construction activities.
• Stop equipment from working if there is a high risk or it is unsafe to use.
• Initiate troubleshooting requirements for Shaft and Winder issues and make recommendations for system improvement.
• Perform other related duties as assigned by the Engineering Manager - KMS to ensure an efficient and effective work environment.

ROLE REQUIREMENTS

Education & Qualification

• BSc, BTech, or HND in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
• Must possess Sectional Engineer Certificate of Competency from Mineral Commission of Ghana.
• Professional Certificated Engineer from GhIE as stated in Ghana Engineering Council Act 2011, Act 819 will be an advantage.

Experience

• Minimum of five years' operational experience within an underground mining operational environment.
• At least three years of hands-on exposure on underground mining winder machinery maintenance, safety systems, and team supervision.
• Demonstrated experience with and knowledge of underground winder machinery operations, braking systems, winder ropes, conveyances, skips, sheave wheels, mechanical clutching systems, jack catches, control panels, motors, drive systems, safety interlocks, engineering maintenance management, and operating systems.
• Experience in project management.
• Financial, commercial, and project management exposure through work experience and courses.
• Knowledge of SAP PM module will be an advantage.

Knowledge & Skills

• Expertise in managing shaft and winder-related infrastructure including headframes, sheaves, shaft guides, skips, and cages maintenance competencies in mining and or extractive.
• Sound project management skills.
• Knowledge of winders and shaft safety protocols and regulatory requirements including shaft inspection procedures, emergency preparedness, and contingency planning.
• Commercially astute and able to work effectively with third parties.
• Skilled in planning and coordinating the logistics of moving personnel, equipment, and materials underground, including optimizing loading and unloading times to maximize productivity.
• Excellent skills in Microsoft PowerPoint, Word, Project, and Excel.
• Must be able to communicate about technical issues both orally and in writing.
• Knowledge in AGA standards.
• Knowledge in OEM legalities and mining regulations.
• Demonstrated ability for project delivery.
• Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of personnel from technical to management to executive.
• Ability to delegate tasks, evaluate progression and adherence to deadlines, and re-prioritize planned activities and tasks.
• Problem solving skills and ability to identify solutions to problems that others have not considered.
• Hands-on approach and willingness to work long hours to obtain the required results.
• Ability to meet diverse engineering challenges within the broad scope of the engineering field pertaining to production orientated activities.
