AngloGold Ashanti (Ghana) Limited, Obuasi Gold Mine is currently near completion of the redevelopment phase to become a modern, efficient and long-term profitable operation. The underground mining operation has been fully mechanized and designed to produce up to an average maximum of 5,000 t/day of ore mined.

OBJECTIVE OF THE ROLE

 

  • The Senior Specialist – Project Controls acts as the ultimate safeguard for project operating as a strategic gatekeeper for Director -Projects.
  • This role is responsible for establishing the governance framework that protects the project baseline.
  • The role adds value to the Obuasi Project team by ensuring all projects are complaint, project controls and the standardized project management processes are delivered in line with AGA’s policies, procedures and corporate guidance. 

 

ROLE ACCOUNTABILITIES

 

  • Demonstrate and uphold AngloGold Ashanti’s values in all decisions, actions, and professional conduct.
  • Actively support full compliance with site safety requirements and foster a culture of zero harm across all activities.
  • Design, implement, and maintain an integrated project controls framework (cost, schedule, and risk) tailored for mining and construction project environment
  • Establish and independently verify the Performance Measurement Baseline (PMB), ensuring contractor execution setups are structurally sound, logic-linked, and fully transparent.
  • Establish and enforce the overarching project controls standards, KPIs, and reporting cycles that EPCM firms and prime contractors must adhere to.
  • Lead the project controls verification at major stage-gates, providing independent assurance that cost baselines and schedules are realistic before proceeding to funding release and execution phases.
  • Review project execution strategy and readiness plan and address identified gaps for projects
  • Manage project expenditure, track commitments, and facilitate timely payment verification and processing
  • Identify and utilize appropriate information from the contractors’ project cost systems to ensure the project costs progress reports are aligned with agreed contract terms and conditions
  • Implement cost control methodologies focused heavily on consistent and predictable forecasting
  • Manage schedule progress, proactively analyze deviations, and propose corrective adjustments.
  • Perform deep-dive Critical Path Method (CPM) analyses, monitoring float consumption rates, logic density, and near-critical path volatility to identify structural friction points early.
  • Audit contractor schedule logic and physical progress measurement frameworks to ensure reported "earned value" matches true construction velocity and physical reality on site.
  • Manage project information repository and improve the project document control system
  • Manage comprehensive weekly and monthly project dashboards detailing cost, schedule, changes and risks
  • Analyse existing project reporting templates and provide comments/feedback for review
  • Review contractor claims, progress billings, and productivity factors to protect the owner’s interest.
  • Establish a proactive approach for identifying and managing project risk
  • Facilitate regular project risk reviews, maintaining the quantitative risk register and linking risks to schedule/cost contingencies
  • Administer the allocation and drawdown of owner-controlled cost and schedule contingencies, ensuring reserves are explicitly tied to quantified, residual project risks.
  • Lead the project Change Management process, ensuring all deviations from the baseline are identified, logged, and evaluated.
  • Collaborate with Project Managers to quantify the cost and schedule impacts of changes before they are approved.
  • Manage project budget shifts and contingency reserves while escalating scope changes that impact the original approved project budget to the Capital Investment function.

 

ROLE REQUIREMENTS

 

Education & Qualification

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, building technology, construction management, quantity surveying, economics, management or a related technical discipline
  • Professional training emphasizing execution and controls such as PMP, PMI-SP, PMI-RMP, PMI-CP, CCP/PSP or CCMP) is highly desirable.
  • A master’s degree in engineering, finance or project management is advantageous.

 

Experience

 

  • Minimum 8 years’  hands-on project controls experience preferably within mining or built environment.

 

Knowledge & Skills

 

  • Sound theoretical and technical knowledge in project management principles, procurement, contract & claims management, scheduling, document control, cost estimating, budgeting and forecasting
  • Knowledge in project management reporting software (SAP PS, Primavera)
  • Understanding of financial models and project economics.
  • Physically fit to meet site medical and functional capacity requirements.
  • Valid Ghanaian manual driver's licence (as required by site).
