AngloGold Ashanti (Ghana) Limited, Obuasi Gold Mine is currently near completion of the redevelopment phase to become a modern, efficient and long-term profitable operation. The underground mining operation has been fully mechanized and designed to produce up to an average maximum of 5,000 t/day of ore mined.

OBJECTIVE OF THE ROLE
The role holder will lead and manage all mechanical maintenance, repair, and reliability functions to ensure the efficient and safe operation of these critical systems in an underground mining environment. This role is essential for maintaining the availability and performance of all Surface Ventilation fans, the two Fridge plant at KMS & GCS respectively, Fixed Plant Workshop for pump rebuild surface gensets operation and maintenance, Assay lab and core yard equipment maintenance overhead cranes and ancillary equipment maintenance.
It involves overseeing the planning, execution, and continuous improvement of maintenance activities to maximize equipment uptime, ensure compliance with safety and environmental standards, and support production targets through the application of operational engineering policies, standards, systems, and procedures to maximize equipment availability in a sustainable cost-effective manner and minimize operational risks in order to meet the business’ strategic objective.
ROLE ACCOUNTABILITIES
Safety
- Regulatory Leadership & Compliance: Enforce strict adherence to mine safety, health, and environmental regulations (HSE) with a zero-tolerance approach to breaches and a commitment to "zero defect" quality principles.
- Proactive Risk Management: Lead by example in identifying and mitigating hazards through the rigorous use of safety tools, including Job Hazard Analyses (JHA), audits, workplace inspections, and the implementation of Major Hazard Standards.
- Operational Safety Excellence: Drive the Safety Management Plan by conducting Planned Task Observations and monitoring leading indicators to ensure all refurbishment and mining tasks are performed without injury.
- Continuous Improvement & Training: Foster a culture of safety by investigating incidents to prevent recurrence, identifying training needs, and continuously seeking design and field improvements to align with company values.
Environment
- Compliance & Accountability: Ensure full adherence to the site’s Environmental Management Plan and Ghana Government approvals, maintaining a strict target of zero reportable incidents or compliance breaches.
- Operational Stewardship: Oversee team performance regarding environmental obligations, including enforcing work procedures, managing the Assets Register, and meeting EPA standards for underground water discharge.
- Risk Mitigation & Investigation: Proactively use "Analyse and Improve" tools to investigate process interruptions, manage the Section Aspect Register, and lead formal incident investigations with actionable recommendations.
- Resource Efficiency & Engagement: Drive energy optimization to reduce consumption per unit produced, while fostering a proactive culture by leading environmental meetings, training, and addressing employee suggestions.
People
- Team Mobilization & Structure: Establish and maintain a high-performing Mine Infrastructure maintenance team, ensuring the organizational structure is optimized to deliver the site’s maintenance strategy and AGA localization objectives.
- Performance Leadership: Define clear roles and accountabilities using "How We Work" guidelines, providing direct mentorship and leadership techniques to subordinates to maximize team output and reporting performance.
- Strategic Workforce Planning: Lead recruitment, succession planning for key positions, and the development of comprehensive skills matrices across all disciplines to identify and close technical capability gaps.
- Training & Development Excellence: Execute robust Individual Development Plans (targeting 90% compliance), coordinate internal/external technical training, and ensure OEM/Vendor training for all new or refurbished installations.
Construction & Refurbishment
- Contractor Interface Management: Establish and manage the internal processes required to coordinate effectively with EPCM and refurbishment contractors, ensuring seamless integration with construction and maintenance teams.
- Maintenance & Infrastructure Oversight: Monitor and optimize maintenance planning and management outcomes for all Mechanical infrastructure within the area of accountability.
- Performance & Quality Control: Implement reporting processes to ensure both contractor and internal workforces deliver projects that meet strict cost, schedule, and quality standards as defined in the Feasibility Study.
- Project Governance: Proactively manage the refurbishment lifecycle to prevent cost and schedule overruns, providing accurate, real-time updates on construction progress and budget status.
Maintenance
- Strategic Asset Management: Lead infrastructure maintenance strategies aligned with Life-of-Mine plans, ensuring high availability and reliability of critical assets while implementing best practices in asset health and energy efficiency.
- Critical Systems Oversight: Guarantee the continuous delivery of safe ventilation, refrigeration, and water services (potable and raw) by overseeing the operation, statutory testing, and redundancy of fans, fridge plants, and treatment facilities.
- Financial & Contractual Control: Manage operating and maintenance budgets, optimize contractor and OEM spend, and oversee service-level agreements to ensure cost-effective infrastructure support.
- Infrastructure & Dam Integrity: Oversee the maintenance and integrity of the JIMI dam, pumping systems, pipelines, and storage infrastructure to ensure regulatory and operational water standards are met.
- Operational Readiness & Workshop Leadership: Manage fixed plant workshops for the overhaul and testing of pumps and rotables, while maintaining standby power readiness and ensuring the reliability of assay lab and core yard equipment.
- Compliance & Safety Governance: Ensure 100% compliance with statutory inspections, load testing for cranes/hoists, and environmental regulations, while leading risk assessments and incident investigations to promote a zero-harm culture.
- Planning & Performance Reporting: Drive a rolling three-month schedule of work packages (targeting 80% scheduled work) and report on key KPIs including availability, reliability, and critical variations to the Operating Master Schedule.
- Technical Team Development: Build in-house technical capability through coaching, mentoring, and structured training programs to reduce reliance on external contractors and ensure a skilled, authorized workforce.
Cost
- Budgetary Oversight & Management: Coordinate and manage the departmental budget in alignment with company strategy, ensuring all cost impacts are evaluated and financial goals are met through rigorous operational oversight.
- Cost Optimization & Accountability: Identify and implement strategic cost-reduction initiatives and savings projects, while ensuring all team members understand their specific financial obligations and contributions to budget targets.
Risk Management
- Developing the risk and mitigation plans and activities for all maintenance works relating to the mine infrastructure.
- Monitor equipment performance on asset health system and take proactive measures to address symptoms of potential failure
Reporting
- Report directly to the Engineering Manager – Mine Infrastructure & Services on issues and identify and execute improvement projects
Authorities
- Stop equipment from working if there exists a high risk or unsafe to be used
- Initiate troubleshooting requirements for Mechanical faults
- Make recommendations for system improvement
Maintenance System
- Life-of-Mine Strategic Planning: Develop and execute a long-term asset management strategy and infrastructure plan aligned with the Obuasi Operations' expected life of mine, ensuring sustainable system development.
- Systems & Supply Integration: Drive full utilization of the SAP asset maintenance management system by ensuring team competency, while collaborating with procurement to establish robust inventory and spare parts support.
Plans, Procedures, Standards and Documentation
- Engineering Planning & Documentation: Develop and maintain the Mine Infrastructure Engineering Management Plan and oversee the RFI/TQ process, ensuring all technical and non-technical documentation is reviewed and approved to high standards.
- Project Execution Support: Provide critical input into the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS), budgeting, and scheduling, while contributing to cross-functional plans for Safety, Quality, and Commissioning for all refurbishment activities.
Compliance
Role holder must comply with following:
- Relevant legislation.
- Applicable codes.
- Best practice, Industry and AGAG standards.
- AGAG Quality systems, policies, procedures and processes.
- Internal project requirements.
Meetings, Reviews and Communication
- Operational Coordination & Governance: Chair regular infrastructure and mining progress meetings, ensuring rigorous documentation of actions and consistent follow-up to guarantee task completion.
- Systems & Readiness Integration: Facilitate formal SAP operational readiness and handover interfaces, while participating in cost and schedule reviews to ensure accurate project reporting.
Continuous Improvement
- Continuously identify and collate opportunities to improve cost, schedule, quality and safety outcomes to all engineering, mining, refurbishment and construction activities undertaken in the area of accountability
Quality Management, Witness Testing and Inspection
- Inspect all refurbishment works on vent fans, fridge plant and other ancillary equipment to ensure works are delivered in accordance with applicable designs, specifications and expectations.
- Oversee refurbishment witness inspections and testing regime to ensure quality and or performance is in line with obligations and expectations.
ROLE REQUIREMENTS
Education & Qualification
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Maintenance, Civil, Building Technology etc) with minimum of 5+ years of experience OR
- Diploma in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Maintenance, etc. per Reg. 51 &54 LI2182) with minimum of 10 years of relevant experience
- Must have an Engineering Superintendent or Sectional Engineer or Inspecting Engineer Certificate of Competence from the Inspectorate Division of the Mineral Commission (IDMC).
- Must have a Professional Engineer (PE) license from either the Ghana Institution of Engineering (GhIE) or Institution of Engineering and Technology, Ghana (IET-GH).
Experience
- 5+ years in engineering roles, with significant experience in mining operations
Knowledge & Skills
- Senior-level professional responsible for overseeing engineering projects and ensuring compliance with safety and quality standard
- Verifiable experience in shutdown planning for underground mining operations and Support Infrastructure maintenance.
- Experience in Project Management
- Knowledge of SAP PM module
