OBJECTIVE OF THE ROLE

 

  • Plan, monitor and control the work output to standard of all electrical low and medium voltage aspects of underground infrastructure, including electrical maintenance, installations, power distribution and energy management, through the application of operational engineering policies, standards, processes and procedures to maximise plant availability in a sustainable cost-effective manner and minimise operational risks in order to meet the business strategic objective.
  • Ensure the underground electrical maintenance team delivers safe, productive and efficient operational output.
  • Coordinate and provide control of the refurbishment, new build and maintenance of electrical and energy management aspects of underground infrastructure, ensuring equipment is installed and maintained according to OEM standards, AGA standards and applicable national and internal standards for timely handover fit for purpose to operations.
  • Provide electrical and energy management technical system support by ensuring best electrical practices are in place and compliant with statutory and regulatory requirements in line with the company operational strategy.
  • Support compliance to electrical standards, reduce costs, improve reliability and sustain operational improvement initiatives through the implementation and execution of the AGA Asset Management Plan.

 

ROLE ACCOUNTABILITIES

 

  • Work according to total quality management principles and ensure zero defect objectives and safety.
  • Deliver the Safety Management Plan element of the section and ensure compliance to safety leading indicators.
  • Lead by example to create a safe working environment where risks are assessed and managed so tasks are performed without risk of injury or harm.
  • Use working elements of the Safety Management System, including inspections, audits and JHA, and ensure team compliance.
  • Assist with timely investigation of all injuries, illness and incidents, with action plans developed to prevent recurrence.
  • Identify safety training needs and provide safety training to enable personnel to safely perform designated work.
  • Implement Major Hazard Standards.
  • Carry out positive and hazards observation and reporting.
  • Undertake workplace visits and inspections.
  • Adhere to the site Environmental Management Plan.
  • Implement maintenance and operational activities in accordance with Government of Ghana conditions of approvals and the site Aspect Register related to the section.
  • Coordinate the review of the Aspect Register related to the section.
  • Gather information for the Electrical Superintendent – GCS, Adansi, KRS Complex for performance reporting.
  • Using AGA How we Work guidelines, clearly define the roles and accountabilities of subordinates.
  • Support the development and execution of training and development plans.
  • Communicate policies and procedures in a manner that achieves full understanding and compliance.
  • Provide guidance to subordinates in leadership techniques to achieve maximum performance.
  • Support setting electrical requirements within supervisors’ skills matrices and initiate corrective action where deficiencies are identified and escalated.
  • Develop an appropriate succession plan for key positions with supportive development plans.
  • Ensure Individual Development Plans are 90% compliant.
  • Conduct periodic audits of underground electrical infrastructure during refurbishment and maintenance.
  • Conduct reviews of refurbishment and maintenance of underground low and medium voltage infrastructure to identify actions for continuous improvement.
  • Assist the Electrical Superintendent – GCS, Adansi, KRS Complex to develop condition monitoring routes and checks for infrastructure equipment.
  • Execute refurbishment and maintenance work checks on a routine scheduled basis, including visual checks and electrical tests.
  • Analyse and trend predictive maintenance data, including vibration and infrared results, to determine plant condition and report for action.
  • Monitor general physical condition of plant assets and report findings.
  • Monitor preventive and corrective actions as necessary.
  • Generate work requests in SAP as required for refurbishment and maintenance planning and scheduling.
  • Ensure routine condition monitoring tasks are performed on all electrical and rotating equipment using portable data collectors and other tools according to established schedules and plant requirements.
  • Gather information and data to diagnose and troubleshoot electrical problems.
  • Actively participate in maintenance review programmes and Root Cause Failure Analysis processes for electrical equipment.
  • Ensure all electrical personnel are trained in new or updated SOPs.
  • Coordinate and ensure effective implementation of all provisions in LI2182 relating to electrical work.
  • Carry out simulations on alterations and additions of applicable electrical equipment and approve same before installations.
  • Monitor and ensure adequate training sessions are organised with the Engineering Training Coordinator on identified gaps in electrical work carried out by the underground maintenance team.
  • Ensure training is compliant, supports operational requirements of the electrical team and is delivered at optimum cost.
  • Provide on the job training for the team in various electrical maintenance tasks.
  • Achieve power availability to support operations with internal availability of power at 98% of plan.
  • Achieve budgeted power consumption targets to support operations.
  • Support implementation and coordinate monitoring of all aspects of the Electrical Management System.
  • Implement electrical equipment replacement policy.
  • Conduct periodic walkthrough inspections and substation audits of all underground infrastructure electrical new build and later maintenance work.
  • Assist to develop or review electrical specifications relevant to the mine.
  • Support compliance to the Asset Integrity Program on replacement of Oil Circuit Breakers with vacuum or gas Circuit Breakers and related requirements.
  • Coordinate and ensure statutory tests are conducted, including annual dielectric testing of transformer oil, earth resistance testing and portable appliance testing.
  • Carry out energy conservation initiatives to reduce energy consumption.
  • Conduct investigations and audits into major and recurrent electrical faults.
  • Support thermography scan survey at underground.
  • Support the writing of standards, procedures and policies.
  • Conduct regular power quality and energy audits.
  • Identify, communicate and implement potential cost reduction initiatives.
  • Propose cost saving projects.
  • Support inputs into the departmental budget.
  • Communicate relevant financial detail to subordinates at the appropriate level to ensure understanding of budget goals and obligations.
  • Ensure engineering costs per ton treated are within target.
  • Ensure engineering costs per ounce produced are within target.
  • Execute work in a timely manner.
  • Maintain optimised electrical operation of surface facilities and underground infrastructure within approved schedules and monitor critical intermediate milestones.
  • Escalate real or potential delays.
  • Monitor equipment performance on the asset health system and take proactive measures to address symptoms of potential failure.
  • Report directly to the Electrical Superintendent – GCS, Adansi, KRS Complex on issues and identify and execute improvement projects.
  • Stop equipment from working if there is high risk or it is unsafe to use.
  • Initiate troubleshooting requirements for electrical faults.
  • Make recommendations for system improvement.

 

ROLE REQUIREMENTS

 

Education & Qualification

 

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or Technology with a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience, or Diploma in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or Technology with a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience, or Electrical Technician Part III Certificate with 5 years of relevant experience in electrical engineering operations.
  • Inspecting Engineer Certificate of Competence from the Inspectorate Division of the Mineral Commission is preferred.
  • Professional Engineering license from either the Ghana Institution of Engineering or Institution of Engineering and Technology, Ghana is preferred.

 

Experience

 

  • Experienced electrical maintenance personnel, preferably in underground low and medium voltage infrastructure and installations, underground fixed and mobile plant infrastructure, energy management, audit, dewatering systems, conveyors and power distribution at underground, with supervisory skills and experience.
  • Experience in management of Maintenance and Repair Contracts.
  • Experience in Project Management.
  • Demonstrated ability for project delivery.
  • Proven ability to initiate and drive construction project activities through the project life cycle.

 

Knowledge & Skills

 

  • Possess leadership, team management, problem-solving, decision-making, communication and interpersonal skills through work experience and courses.
  • Knowledge of SAP PM module.
  • Strong electrical maintenance and design competencies in mining and or extractive environment, plant operations, power and energy sector.
  • Sound and working knowledge in electrical standards and specifications.
  • Energy management experience.
  • Sound project management skills.
  • Analytical skills to evaluate information and solve complex problems.
  • Detail oriented with the ability to understand complex systems and recognise that minor errors can cause major problems.
