OBJECTIVE OF THE ROLE
- To supervise and execute welding, fabrication and maintenance activities within the crushing plant to ensure safe, reliable and efficient operation of plant equipment.
- To lead welding teams, coordinate repair works, maintain structural integrity of plant components and ensure all welding activities are completed in accordance with safety, quality and maintenance standards to support plant availability and operational performance.
ROLE ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Work Planning & Execution: Plan, schedule, and direct daily fabrication, welding, and structural maintenance tasks for routine operations, project installations, and plant shutdowns.
- Team Supervision: Lead, mentor, and manage direct reports, boilermakers, fitters, and contract welders; monitor work quality, productivity, and site attendance.
- Safety & Compliance: Enforce strict adherence to Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) protocols, perform Job Safety Analyses (JSA), enforce Hot Work permit requirements, and ensure zero-harm operations.
- Quality Assurance & Control (QA/QC): Conduct pre-weld visual inspections, verify fit-up alignment, monitor welding parameters, and coordinate Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) such as dye penetrant, magnetic particle, or ultrasonic testing.
- Technical Oversight: Interpret complex engineering drawings, structural blueprints, piping schematics, and WPS (Welding Procedure Specifications); ensure correct joint design and material selection (carbon steel, stainless steel, wear plates).
- Equipment & Material Management: Oversee the maintenance and operation of welding machines, cutting tools, riggers, and crane lifts; manage structural steel inventory, welding consumables, and gas cylinders.
- Shutdown & Project Coordination: Coordinate urgent structural repairs, wear liner replacements, chute repairs, and pipe spooling during planned plant turnarounds to minimize operational downtime.
- Reporting & Cost Control: Prepare daily shift progress reports, log fabrication hours, track consumable usage, and manage resource allocation within designated operational budgets.
ROLE REQUIREMENTS
Education & Qualification
- Diploma, Trade Certificate, or Higher National Diploma (HND) in Mechanical Engineering, Fabrication, Welding, or relevant trade discipline.
- Certified International/National Welding Inspector (AWS CWI, CSWIP 3.1, or equivalent trade master certification) strongly preferred.
Experience
- Minimum of 8–10 years in heavy structural steel fabrication, piping, and plant maintenance, with at least 3–5 years in a supervisory or senior leadership capacity.
- Proven experience in fabrication, structural steels and maintenance welding.
- Experience in using SAP or any Computerised Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
Knowledge & Skills
- Commitment to safety, quality and teamwork.
- Proficient in SMAW, GTAW, GMAW, FCAW, and oxy-fuel/plasma cutting techniques.
- Demonstrated ability to encourage team safety and event/hazard reporting.
- Proven track record in supervising multi-disciplinary crews, managing contractor teams, and delivering under tight shutdown deadlines.
- Deep understanding of international welding codes (e.g., AWS D1.1, ASME Section IX, API 1104).
- Expert reading and interpreting engineering, structural, and isometric drawings.
- Must possess valid Ghanaian Driving License and proficiency to drive light vehicle.
- An understanding of corrosion mechanisms, failure mechanisms, technical exposure to NDT / Inspection / Corrosion monitoring.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Word, Excel and MS Project.
- Reliability, being punctual, dependable and ready to support daily tasks.
- Attention to detail, accurately recording and relaying measurements and observations.
- Safety focus, maintaining high safety standards in all tasks and reporting hazards.
- Team support, contributing positively to team goals and assisting as needed.
