About the Role

The Superintendent, Health, Safety & Security (HSS) is responsible for developing, implementing, and managing occupational safety, health, and security policies, procedures, and behavior-based programs across Nevada Projects. This role drives continuous improvement, regulatory compliance, and risk management initiatives to ensure all employees, contractors, and stakeholders work safely and return home healthy every day. As a key member of the site leadership team reporting to the site Health, Safety & Security Manager, the HSS Superintendent partners closely with the VP Nevada Projects, Site Leadership, Operations, and Maintenance teams to embed a proactive safety culture, strengthen risk management practices, and maintain compliance with MSHA, OSHA, and applicable state and federal requirements.

 

Key Responsibilities

Safety Leadership & Culture
• Champion a strong safety culture through visible felt leadership and active engagement with employees, contractors, and site leaders.
• Promote personal accountability, self-leadership, and enforce an individual's stop-work authority across all levels of the organization.
• Lead behavior-based safety programs founded on positive reinforcement of safe behaviors and timely correction of unsafe practices.
• Coach supervisors and managers in safety leadership, hazard recognition, and incident prevention strategies.

Regulatory Compliance & Governance
• Ensure organizational compliance with all federal, state, and local safety, health, and security laws, regulations, codes, and MSHA standards.
• Standardize and execute all HSS processes and procedures consistently across Nevada Projects.
• Maintain current knowledge of regulatory requirements and serve as a designated signing authority for health and safety matters.
• Maintain compliant files, regulatory records, and documentation to support regulatory agency interactions, inspections, and reporting obligations.

Risk Management & Incident Prevention
• Lead both formal risk assessment and field-level risk assessment programs.
• Manage fatal risk management and lifesaving controls programs across the operation.
• Maintain a Safety Management Information System (SMIS) to track regulatory compliance, analyze incident statistics and leading indicators, identify root causes, and mitigate emerging risks.
• Lead incident investigations, root cause analyses, and corrective action development.

Training & Workforce Development
• Lead MSHA New Miner training programs, refresher courses, and site-specific safety and health orientations.
• Deliver safety leadership, hazard recognition, unplanned events, and root cause investigation training for managers, supervisors, and site personnel.
• Provide site-specific contractor safety orientations and monitor contractor compliance with company standards and regulations.
• Provide hazardous material/right-to-know training and manage Material Safety Data systems.
• Create, refresh, and re-brand educational and promotional materials to continuously educate stakeholders on safety and health aspects.

Occupational Health & Industrial Hygiene
• Lead and maintain employee medical monitoring and occupational health programs.
• Manage industrial hygiene monitoring programs related to air quality, water, noise, heat stress, and chemical exposures.
• Assist area managers with workplace inspections of ventilation and exhaust equipment, lighting, fire prevention tools, safety equipment, and first-aid resources.

Emergency Preparedness & Response
• Lead, maintain, and update site emergency response plans, emergency drills, and response team training.
• Provide on-call support for emergency response and significant site incidents as required.

 

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Health, or related field from an ISHM or ABET accredited program preferred.
• Certified MSHA Instructor status required.
• Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Safety and Health Manager (CSHM) designation preferred.
• Minimum 5 years of health and safety leadership experience within the U.S. mining industry, preferably in Nevada.
• Demonstrated success leading safety programs in surface gold mining environments.
• Strong background in behavior-based safety theory and practical implementation.
• Extensive knowledge of MSHA surface mining regulations and compliance frameworks.
• Proven track record of achieving best-in-class MSHA Total Recordable Incident Frequency rates at open-pit mines.
• Broad technical understanding of gold mining and mineral processing engineering principles, operational workflows, and associated risks.
• Demonstrated experience managing Safety Management Information Systems (SMIS) to analyze incident statistics and execute root cause analysis.
• Exceptional training, presentation, facilitation, and communication skills across all operational levels.
• Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and a proven track record of staff development and succession planning.
• Demonstrates behaviors consistent with AngloGold Ashanti values, building trust with internal teams, vendors, contractors, and regulatory officials.
• Valid driver's license required with the ability to operate company vehicles safely.
• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
• Ability to maintain strict confidentiality regarding all business, personnel, and operational information.
• Flexibility to provide on-call support as required for operational emergencies.
