About the Role

The Industrial Hygiene & Safety Intern will help anticipate, evaluate and control health hazards, train the department on industrial hygiene equipment, and work on other aspects of sampling.

This is a project-based internship. Rather than generalized administrative tasks, you will be assigned a core technical project to own from start to finish. This role offers hands-on experience, culminating in an end-of-program presentation to technical leadership.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Take ownership of a dedicated 12-week project, managing timelines, and delivering a final technical report and presentation.
  • Industrial Hygiene & Exposure Management
    • Anticipate, recognize, and evaluate physical, chemical, and biological hazards across all operational locations.
    • Design and execute IH sampling plans
    • to ensure compliance with regulatory standards and company policies.
    • Document and maintain all exposure monitoring data and risk profiles in a centralized risk registry.
    • Lead the system set-up and administration of environmental health and safety software (ideally Cority) to track IH data.
    • Develop and deliver training to the Health, Safety, and Security (HSS) staff on basic IH principles and sampling methodologies.
  • Chemical & Equipment Compliance
    • Manage the chemical inventory system, ensuring all Safety Data Sheets (SDS) are updated and accessible.
    • Oversee gas detection programs, including the selection, calibration, maintenance, and user training for fixed and portable gas monitors.
    • Conduct a comprehensive confined space inventory, ensuring accurate classification, hazard assessment, and compliant labeling across all sites.
  • Emergency Response & Operations
    • Provide dedicated support to the Mine Rescue team, assisting with training coordination, equipment readiness, and emergency protocols.
    • Perform regular safety inspections and comprehensive risk assessments to proactively mitigate workplace hazards.
    • Review and update Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the North Bullfrog site, making necessary adjustments to align with evolving regulatory and operational needs.

 

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Currently enrolled as a rising senior in an Undergraduate program or final-year Master's student pursuing a degree in Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Health and Safety, Chemistry, Environmental Science, or a closely related field.
  • Foundational understanding of industrial hygiene, occupational health and safety.
  • Strong technical writing, reporting, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to analyze datasets, draw logical conclusions, and present findings clearly.
  • A collaborative mindset with an eagerness to learn and proactively ask questions.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • Valid driver’s license required; willingness to travel to project sites if necessary.

 

Fall Recruitment Timeline & Hiring Milestones

September 15 – October 30, 2026 (Application Review): Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. Early submission is highly encouraged.

Successful applicants will move to a virtual interview with the internship program manager.

October 12 – November 6, 2026 (Final Rounds): Finalists are invited to a virtual hiring manager interview.

November 16 – 20, 2026 (Offers Extended): Final hiring decisions and official offer letters will be extended before the winter university break.
