The Obuasi Redevelopment Project has attained its original project schedule to become a modern efficient processing and underground mechanized operation, and it is now moving to achieving study state operation with the final aim of achieving 5000 tonnes per day processing.

ROLE PURPOSE

 

Cyanide is one of the most critical reagents used in a gold processing plant. It’s complexity with regards to its extremely hazardous nature with a UN hazardous material classification number of 1588 and DOT number 6.1. This has necessitated the need for special attention both with international and local regulatory bodies covering from manufacturing/production, usage to disposal of associated contaminated material.

 

The Minerals and Mining LI 2182 under regulation 219 enjoins the Manager of a gold processing plant to appoint a qualified person to supervise the handling of this chemical on a gold processing mine. 

 

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

 

  • Assess risks for all tasks and ensure they are controlled before and during task execution.
  • Report all incidents and ensure they have been investigated and corrective actions completed on time.
  • Act on all corrective actions assigned to you or under your jurisdiction and ensure timely completion
  • Investigate all environmental incidents in assigned work areas and prepare reports with recommendations for the Departmental Manager for onward submission to the Environmental Manager or his representative
  • Conduct formal meetings with team and report any weaknesses in the environmental procedures
  • Actively promote AGA Health, Safety and Environmental actions and improvements which include housekeeping.
  • Ensure the right specs of PPEs required for the handling of cyanide are available for use when needed.
  • Assist the Training Officer in training the processing employees in compliance with content in Legal Instruments LI 2182 under regulation 219 and Codes as laid down by the Republic of Ghana
  • Maintain safe and healthy training environment by following organization standards and legal regulations
  • Assist in training employees as part of the International Cyanide Management Institute compliance requirements
  • Compile, update and conduct plant induction training for employees and visitors especially in the area of cyanide awareness.
  • Facilitate all pre and post cyanide training work including logistics, tracking of trainings and performance of trainees based on assessments and capture all training events on learning management systems
  • Assist in implementing the training framework across Business partners such as suppliers and service providers.
  • Assist with training responsibilities together with plant training officers in upskilling plant workers and other stakeholders.
  • Shall be the custodian of cyanide related issues and its related documentation on behalf of AGA STP.
  • Shall coordinate cyanide procurement and reception on behalf of AGA STP
  • Shall supervise the process leading to certification of AGA Obuasi onto ICMI code
  • Shall be the custodian of the AGA Obuasi STP cyanide sparging facility
  • Report to the Senior Metallurgist on all cyanide related issues including stock movement and non-conformances and follow through to get them fixed.
  • Assist in developing and revision of cyanide related SOPs and other documents.
  • Ensure all cyanide related instruments are effectively operational and well calibrated
  • Assist and coordinate with key partners stakeholders including community and sustainability department in periodic community sensitization on the use of cyanide.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of cyanide training materials and activities and review accordingly.
  • Assist in contributing to the budgeting and cost control processes in the area of sparging facility and PPEs

 

 

QUALIFICATION, EXPERIENCE AND TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES

 

Qualification

 

  • BSc / Diploma in Metallurgical, Chemical, or Materials Engineering, Chemistry
  • Trainer certification especially in cyanide handling
  • Basic First Aid Certification
  • Should be familiar with ICMI code and certification. If certified, will be a plus

 

Experience

 

  • Minimum of two-year working experience with cyanide sparging/mixing and storage facility
  • Minimum of two-year working experience on a recognized process plant

 

Technical Competencies

 

  • Good computer skills
  • Good presentation skills
  • Must be able to understand and appreciate the hazards associated with cyanide and instruments used in handling cyanide.
  • Good communication skills
