Position Overview

 

As the Director, Legal - Guinea at Société Anglogold Ashanti, based in our Conakry office, you will play a pivotal role reporting directly to the Vice President, Legal West Africa. You will be the principal legal advisor and strategic leader for all legal and company secretarial functions supporting AngloGold Ashanti's operations in Guinea. This role is vital in ensuring effective legal support, managing risks, and safeguarding the company's compliance with all relevant laws and regulations.

 

 

Key Responsibilities

 

  • Lead and develop the Guinea Legal department, fostering a high-performance team dedicated to delivering expert legal advisory services aligned with corporate strategy and risk management frameworks.
  • Design and implement effective business processes within the legal function, including comprehensive contract review systems, to ensure timely and accurate legal service delivery.
  • Manage relationships with external legal providers, negotiating cost-effective agreements and monitoring service quality to optimise value.
  • Provide strategic legal oversight and guidance to senior management and operational teams relating to company policies, labour management, contract negotiations, community relations, environmental compliance, health and safety regulations, and mining operations.
  • Proactively advise on emerging legal trends, regulatory changes, and implications for the business, delivering training and regular updates to ensure organisational awareness and compliance.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of contracts and legal documents, ensuring the protection of AngloGold Ashanti's interests and promoting sound risk mitigation.
  • Support community and sustainability initiatives by reviewing agreements involving land acquisition, compensation, human rights, and social impact projects, ensuring alignment with local laws and Group policies.
  • Guide and support the Human Resources department in labour law matters, employee relations, disciplinary procedures, and internal investigations, fostering a respectful and compliant workplace.
  • Oversee company secretarial responsibilities for all Guinea entities, ensuring timely statutory filings, managing corporate governance documentation, and acting as the company representative in legal disputes and claims.
  • Develop and manage the legal department budget for Guinea, including monitoring and controlling expenditure on external legal counsel.
  • Identify, recruit, and nurture talent within the legal team, conducting performance evaluations, setting clear accountabilities, and providing opportunities for professional growth and development.
  • Build strong, collaborative relationships with key stakeholders across the business and legal community, supporting integrated and informed decision-making.

 

Qualifications

 

  • A first degree in Law from a recognised institution, with appropriate professional qualifications.

 

Skills and Competencies

 

  • Extensive knowledge of mining law, environmental legislation, labour law, and regulatory requirements within the mining industry.
  • Demonstrable experience in managing legal risks, providing practical and actionable legal advice to senior leadership and business units.
  • Strong contract drafting, review and negotiation expertise, with a focus on allocation of risks and safeguarding company interests.
  • Excellent analytical and decision-making capabilities, able to assess complex issues rapidly and provide clear solutions.
  • Proven leadership skills with the capability to mentor and lead a team effectively, manage workloads, and inspire high standards of performance.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, adept at engaging confidently with internal and external stakeholders at all levels.
  • Experience managing legal budgets and external counsel relationships efficiently to balance cost and service quality.
  • Ability to adapt legal strategies in dynamic environments, ensuring compliance while supporting business objectives.
