AngloGold Ashanti (Ghana) Limited, Obuasi Gold Mine is currently near completion of the redevelopment phase to become a modern, efficient and long-term profitable operation. The underground mining operation has been fully mechanized and designed to produce up to an average maximum of 5,000 t/day of ore mined.

ROLE PURPOSE

 

The role holder will be responsible for overseeing and managing all construction, fabrication, and structural Maintenance activities in the underground environment. This role ensures that infrastructure is built and maintained to high standards, focusing on structural safety, efficiency, and compliance with regulatory and project specifications.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Assess risks for all tasks and ensure they are controlled before and during task execution.
  • Report all incidents and ensure they have been investigated and corrective actions completed on time.
  • Act on all corrective actions assigned to you or under your jurisdiction and ensure timely completion.
  • Accountable for team’s environmental obligations and performances.
  • Conduct formal meetings with team and report any weaknesses in the environmental procedures.
  • Enforce all environmental work procedures that have been issued by the Departmental Manager.
  • Investigate all environmental incidents in assigned work areas and prepare reports with recommendations for the Departmental Manager for onward submission to the Environmental Manager or his representative.
  • Develop and oversee detailed project plans, timelines, and work schedules for all underground construction and fabrication projects, ensuring alignment with mining production goals.
  • Coordinate with engineering, procurement, and other departments to plan project timelines and resource allocation, ensuring efficient use of manpower, materials, and equipment.
  • Lead and supervise teams engaged in the fabrication, construction, and installation of structures, pipelines, ventilation systems, and equipment mounts.
  • Monitor daily work activities, providing direction to ensure adherence to design specifications, safety standards, and quality control measures.
  • Implement rigorous quality control processes, inspecting completed work and materials used in fabrication and construction to ensure adherence to engineering standards and structural integrity.
  • Ensure strict adherence to safety protocols and mine safety regulations, conducting regular safety audits and implementing best practices to reduce risks.
  • Train teams in hazard identification, emergency response, and safe work practices specific to the underground mining setting.
  • Oversee budgeting and expenditure tracking for construction and fabrication projects, managing costs effectively to stay within budget without compromising on quality or safety.
  • Identify cost-saving opportunities through resource optimization, improved fabrication techniques, and efficient procurement.
  • Coordinate repair projects for damaged or deteriorated structures, pipelines, and other critical components, minimizing disruption to mining operations.
  • Address issues and challenges arising during fabrication and construction projects, providing swift solutions to maintain project timelines.
  • Investigate any incidents or accidents, implementing corrective actions and preventive measures to avoid recurrence.
  • Collaborate with engineering, maintenance, and operations teams to ensure construction and fabrication projects support overall mining objectives.
  • Work with procurement to source high-quality materials and with the maintenance team to ensure completed projects are integrated seamlessly with ongoing operations.
  • Regularly review and update fabrication and construction processes, incorporating best practices and technological advancements.
  • Implement and enforce safety protocols for sandblasting and painting operations, ensuring proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), ventilation systems, and containment measures.
  • Comply with environmental regulations regarding disposal of waste materials, including used abrasives, paint residues, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
  • Maintain and inspect sandblasting and painting equipment, such as compressors, hoses, nozzles, spray guns, and protective gear, to ensure they are in optimal working condition.
  • Schedule regular maintenance and repairs to minimize equipment downtime and ensure operational readiness.
  • Oversee and conduct sandblasting operations to prepare surfaces by removing old paint, corrosion, dirt, and other contaminants, ensuring optimal adherence for coatings.
  • Determine the appropriate blasting materials and methods (e.g., abrasive grit type, pressure) based on substrate conditions and coating requirements.
  • Any other work assigned to you by the Engineering Manager- KMS

 

 

 

QUALIFICATION, EXPERIENCE AND TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES

 

Qualification:

  • Minimum of BSc. / BTech in Mechanical or Advanced Specialist Welding & Fabrication Diploma or maintenance engineering or equivalent.
  • Proficiency in Welding Techniques: Extensive experience in different welding methods (e.g., MIG, TIG, Stick, and Flux-Cored Arc Welding), including proficiency with materials like steel, aluminium, and specialized alloys and project management through work experience and courses.

 

Experience:

  • Minimum of five (5) years of demonstrated professional operational experience in major welding, fabrication, sandblasting and painting in a mining environment.

 

Technical Competencies

  • Experience setting up quality control programs for welds, monitoring for defects, and ensuring adherence to standards such as ASME, AWS, and ISO.
  • Hands-on experience with cutting, bending, and shaping techniques, including CNC machining, laser cutting, and manual processes like grinding and finishing.
  • Knowledge of material properties (e.g., tensile strength, corrosion resistance, heat tolerance) to select and handle materials correctly for fabrication.
  • Experience of Maintenance and Repair Contracts (MARC)
  • Experience in management and QA/QC on contractor work structural designs.
  • Verifiable experience in shutdown planning for underground mining operations and Support Infrastructure maintenance.
  • Experience in Project Management
  • Knowledge of SAP PM module
