Geita Gold Mining Ltd (GGML) is Tanzania’s leading gold producer with a single operation in Geita Region. The company is a subsidiary of AngloGold Ashanti, an international gold producer headquartered in Denver, USA. AGA has operations in more than ten countries across four continents. The mine is situated in the Lake Victoria Gold fields of Northwestern Tanzania, only about 120 km’s from Mwanza City and 20 km’s Southeast of the nearest point of Lake Victoria. The company has its main office and operations in Geita, only 5 Km’s west of the fast-growing town of Geita, and a supporting office in Dar es Salaam. PURPOSE OF THE ROLE:
To coordinate and ensure effective implementation of HSE systems within the Geology Department and its contractors, promoting compliance with safety, health, and environmental standards. The role proactively identifies and manages workplace hazards to protect personnel and foster a safe working environment.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree or Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, Geology, or a closely related field.
- Significant relevant experience in lieu of a specific OHS.
- NEBOSH International General Certificate or other relevant certifications and training is an advantage.
- Possession of a valid Tanzanian driving license is an advantage.
EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum of 2–3 years’ proven experience in Occupational Health and Safety within the Geology discipline.
- Experience in developing, implementing, and auditing field safety programs.
- Familiarity with hazards associated with geological fieldwork.
- Experience in incident investigation and reporting.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Knowledge of OHS legislation and standards
- Safety management systems implementation and auditing
- Emergency response planning for remote sites
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills
- Ability to communicate safety concepts clearly and influence others
- Proactive, adaptable, and culturally sensitive
MAIN OR KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Promote a strong safety and environmental culture within the Geology Department, empowering all personnel to identify and address hazards.
- Ensure departmental activities comply with national, regional, OHSE regulations, company policies, and best practices.
- Identify, assess, and report potential hazards and environmental aspects, maintaining records in the departmental BLRA.
- Conduct and facilitate Job Safety Analyses (JSAs) / Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) for specific tasks.
- Implement and enforce Safe Work Procedures and SOPs, especially for high-risk activities.
- Recommend, develop, deliver, and track department-specific safety and environmental training, ensuring personnel are competent for assigned tasks.
- Encourage prompt reporting, investigation, and closure of incidents, near misses, and hazards.
- Identify required PPE, ensuring proper supply, fit, maintenance, and usage.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date safety and environmental records (training, inspections, incidents, risk assessments, permits, equipment checks, monitoring results).
- Conduct regular safety and environmental inspections of workplaces.
- Participate in internal and external audits, tracking findings and ensuring timely corrective actions.
- Disseminate safety alerts, lessons learned, and policy updates effectively.
- Collaborate with geologists, technicians, drillers, and supervisors to address safety and environmental concerns.
- Liaise with site-wide safety, environmental teams, mine operations, and contractors to ensure alignment and consistency.
