The Opportunity

Join Geita Gold Mining Limited as the Manager, Heavy Mobile Equipment (HME) within our Geita Division, a key role that contributes significantly to the operational success of our open pit mining activities. Reporting directly to the Director of Asset Management and Engineering, you will lead and optimise maintenance strategies designed to enhance the availability, reliability, and safety of our mobile mining equipment. Your leadership will be pivotal in ensuring that major services, rebuilds, and maintenance programs are executed efficiently and cost-effectively, supporting our mine plan objectives.

This role encompasses responsibility for all major routine maintenance and rebuild activities for surface and underground mobile equipment. You will oversee workshops, including the welding and tyre bays, guaranteeing operational excellence and adherence to OEM standards. Your expertise will directly impact equipment lifecycle management, workplace safety, and the alignment of maintenance schedules with mining priorities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Champion a safety-first culture by proactively identifying, managing, and mitigating workplace hazards, while ensuring that all team members are competent and trained to perform their tasks safely.
  • Provide strategic technical advice and leadership to maintenance leaders and trades personnel, fostering a high-performance maintenance team skilled in heavy mining equipment upkeep.
  • Develop, review, and implement detailed scopes of work for major maintenance and rebuild projects, ensuring strict adherence to OEM standards and best industry practices.
  • Lead warranty management processes, investigating premature equipment/component failures and pursuing claims to protect company assets and reduce costs.
  • Maintain a comprehensive training register for maintenance staff, monitor skill levels, and implement on-the-job training programs aligned with evolving business needs.
  • Evaluate and refine the equipment replacement strategy, delivering a robust 5-year rolling replacement plan that aligns with operational and financial objectives.
  • Manage and ensure timely execution of equipment rebuild forecasts, programs, and projects providing clear status reporting to senior management.
  • Steer the equipment selection process during acquisitions or fleet expansions, ensuring compliance with AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) standards and operational suitability.
  • Collaborate closely with open pit mining teams to ensure mobile equipment availability, reliability, and safety that supports mining schedules and maximizes productivity.
  • Drive root cause analyses (RCAs) for all major component failures and document repairs comprehensively, facilitating continuous improvement and knowledge sharing.
  • Support operational teams in balancing planned maintenance with reactive work to ensure equipment uptime and optimize reliability.
  • Develop and maintain accurate work packages and procedures for all maintenance activities, establishing a robust knowledge base for future tasks.
  • Coordinate with the planning team to optimize inventory management of spares and materials under Vendor Managed Inventory (VMI) programs to ensure uninterrupted maintenance operations.
  • Ensure all maintenance tasks identified during inspections are logged and completed timely, with thorough documentation and work order closure in the maintenance management system.
  • Participate in the expert on-call roster to provide timely support for breakdowns, reliability issues, and emergency interventions.
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives such as implementing and sustaining a 5S program based on Six Sigma and Lean methodologies across engineering and maintenance installations.
  • Oversee a comprehensive hazard identification and mitigation program within your team, encompassing major hazards and critical control management to uphold high safety standards.
  • Prepare and manage annual budgeting processes, including three-year forecasts aligned with mine planning, while implementing cost control measures to maximise value and efficiency.
  • Manage contractor relationships with a focus on enforcing safety, quality, and cost controls to ensure service delivery meets rigorous company standards.
  • Handle maintenance-related disputes, warranty issues, and quality claims promptly and professionally to safeguard company interests.

Working Conditions

This role is hands-on and may require active participation in maintenance activities on-site, necessitating physical fitness and a readiness to work in dynamic and sometimes challenging conditions. Exposure to loud noise, dust, and other mining environment elements is expected, with strict adherence to personal protective equipment requirements and safety protocols mandatory.

  • You will need excellent hazard awareness to navigate slippery, uneven surfaces and operate safely around heavy machinery.
  • Compliance with company safety policies, SOX controls, conflict of interest declarations, and reporting requirements is essential.

About You

As a seasoned professional with a passion for mining and maintenance excellence, you bring at least 15 years of hands-on experience in heavy mining mobile equipment maintenance, including a minimum of 7 years in senior management roles. Ownership of mechanical engineering qualifications or equivalent vocational experience with demonstrable expertise in managing large equipment fleets is required. Experience with Caterpillar (CAT) equipment maintenance is a distinctive advantage.

You possess strong leadership skills, a collaborative mindset, and the ability to influence and develop multi-disciplinary teams. Your approach combines technical knowledge with strategic thinking to enhance asset reliability while keeping costs in check.
