SUMMARY / OBJECTIVE OF ROLE 

The Decarbonization / Sustainability intern will support AngloGold Ashanti’s Social Licence and Sustainability Strategy, which is critical to delivering on the group’s wider ESG commitments as set out in the 2024 Sustainability Report. The role focuses on scoping and supporting high-impact Sustainability Plan projects across priority sites, contributing to risk mitigation, trust building, and strengthened social license to operate. 

 

Role accountabilities: 

  • Support the Decarbonization / Sustainability team in defining and refining Sustainability Plan pillars and associated projects with the greatest ESG and community impact. 

  • Assist in project managing the rollout of Sustainability Plan projects at Obuasi, Iduapriem, and Geita, including tracking milestones and coordinating inputs from site stakeholders. 

  • Conduct research, data collection, and stakeholder mapping to inform project design, risk mitigation, and opportunities for enhanced social license to operate. 

  • Develop and maintain foundational communication materials (e.g., briefs, summary decks, plan overviews) aligned with the plan’s core pillars and ESG commitments. 

  • Synthesize information from existing Socio-economic Development Plans at Siguiri and contribute to scoping Sustainability Plans for Obuasi, Iduapriem, and Geita. 

  • Contribute to the compilation and/or creation of quarterly Board and SteerCo presentations and materials related to decarbonization, water stewardship, community infrastructure, and energy access. 

 

Key focus areas: 

  1. Water & Environmental Remediation: Clean water provision and rehabilitation of degraded land (especially from illegal mining/Galamsey). 

  1. Community & Social Infrastructure: Support for schools, healthcare facilities, education, and security. 

  1. Decarbonization & Energy: Renewable energy integration and local community energy access. 

 

This intern will also be expected to be involved in the compilation and/or creation of quarterly Board & SteerCo presentations and materials. 

 

Technical Competencies: 

  • Research and analytical skills applied to ESG, sustainability, and socio-economic development topics. 

  • Strong data organization skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office and/or Google Workspace for analysis, documentation, and reporting. 

  • Ability to synthesize information from multiple plans and sources (e.g., socio-economic development plans, sustainability plans) into clear recommendations and materials. 

  • Familiarity with ESG and sustainable development concepts, including environmental management, social impact, governance, and social licence to operate. 

  • Capability to prepare high-quality presentations and reports for senior audiences such as Board and SteerCo. 

 

Leadership & Management Competencies: 

  • Detailed organizational, planning, and analytical skills. 

 

Education & Qualifications: 

  • Undergraduate or graduate degree in Mine Engineering or Geology. 

 

General Knowledge & Experience: 

  • In process of a degree in Mine Engineering or Geology 

  • A basic understanding of the mining value chain and sustainability/decarbonization concepts in an extractive industry context. 

  • Problem-solving skills 

  • Be self-motivated; have an “investigative / curious” nature; and be driven to help the entire organization successfully achieve its goals 

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills- listening, reasoning, speaking, and presenting 

 

COMPENSATION: 

Undergraduate: $27/hour 

Graduate: $35/hour
