The Category Manager (Manager, Procurement Mining Contracts) is responsible for managing end‑to‑end strategic spend categories that directly impact the company’s financial and operational performance. The role focuses on optimizing supplier relationships, driving effective negotiations, and ensuring suppliers meet quality, cost, and delivery expectations.
This position provides direct support to the Director, Category Management – Mining Contracts and Tyres, contributing to the implementation of supply market strategies and delivering insights on market trends, risks, and opportunities. Strong collaboration across functions is essential to align procurement strategies with broader business objectives.
Key Accountabilities
- Support development and execution of the Global Category Management Strategy for assigned spend areas.
- Partner with the Director on supplier relationship management and sourcing plans.
- Contribute to the design and governance of a unified view of supply markets for assigned categories.
- Ensure proper documentation and contract management practices to maintain SOX compliance.
- Build strong relationships with internal stakeholders and suppliers to improve procurement processes.
- Collect and analyze data to assess supplier capability, performance, and market conditions.
- Provide market analysis, benchmarking, and actionable insights.
- Support Business Units with functional expertise related to assigned categories.
- Conduct analyses requested by the Director, including:
- Should-cost modeling
- Price discipline
- Solution modeling
- Advanced analytics
- Market intelligence
- Spend segmentation
- Operational excellence support
- Advise on supply chain risks and opportunities and communicate insights to relevant business partners.
- Assist in preparing quarterly supplier and market updates for leadership.
- Share best practices across supply chain functions.
- Develop negotiation strategies for high‑value contracts to unlock value and efficiencies.
- Support execution of commodity strategies, including opportunity assessment, financial analysis, negotiation, and long‑term contracting.
- Analyze and prepare business cases for decision‑making.
- Draft tender documentation and support contract development.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
- Support supplier relationship management by setting objectives, KPIs, and performance routines.
- Apply market intelligence and sourcing principles to drive value realization.
- Promote consistent and effective category analysis and review processes.
- Identify and evaluate opportunities within assigned categories.
- Oversee tactical delivery of major contracts and tenders.
- Manage contracts through SAP for compliance and efficient administration.
- Support category budget planning and monitor expenditures.
- Implement TCO strategies to reduce external spend and improve category performance.
- Utilize the Category Management Playbook to:
- Review, strategize, execute, and track category initiatives
- Consolidate internal and external market intelligence
- Develop implementation roadmaps
- Track benefits and improvements monthly
- Support Full Asset Potential reviews by contributing to site‑level improvement projects and feeding insights into global and regional strategies.
- Define and track value across five sources: direct spend, capital spend, working capital, TCO impact, and cost avoidance.
- Implement reporting processes that enhance transparency, performance tracking, and strategic focus.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Engineering, or a related field; MBA preferred.
- Minimum 5 years of relevant category management or commercial analytical experience.
