The Director of Community Relations and Government Affairs leads AngloGold Ashanti’s strategy for comprehensive engagement with residents, Tribal Nations, and government entities at all levels. As the primary bridge between AGA’s Nevada projects and the stakeholders who shape our social license to operate, this role drives both political advocacy and on‑the‑ground community development.

Nevada’s projects represent a multi‑generational opportunity to deliver regional economic growth and long-term community benefits. This role advances beyond traditional community relations by building strategic partnerships that address regional challenges—including housing, utilities, and infrastructure—critical to sustaining thriving communities and a strong mining workforce.

Responsibilities

Government Affairs & Legislative Strategy

  • Policy Advocacy: Monitor and influence state legislation affecting mining, water rights, and land use.
  • Regulatory Liaison: Maintain strategic relationships with the Governor’s Office, statewide elected officials, and state and federal regulatory agencies; lead engagement with federal agencies and congressional offices in Washington D.C. on issues related to mining and community development.
  • Legislative Leadership: Direct the work of the Government Affairs Manager; coordinate state and federal lobbyists and consultants to execute aligned lobbying strategies.
  • Local Governance: Represent the company at county and regional board meetings across Beatty, Nye County, Amargosa, and Pahrump to ensure project alignment with local master plans.

Tribal Relations & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Tribal Partnerships: Guide proactive, respectful engagement with Tribal Nations, focused on shared-value initiatives such as scholarships, cultural preservation, and workforce development.
  • Stakeholder Development: Map, cultivate, and sustain relationships with community stakeholders including ranchers, small business owners, and conservation groups.
  • Public Representation: Serve as a spokesperson for media inquiries, public hearings, and community forums.

Community Development & Social Investment

  • Infrastructure Strategy: Lead social investment initiatives addressing housing, healthcare, emergency services, and foundational infrastructure needs.
  • Strategic Philanthropy: Manage the CSR and community grants budget, ensuring investments are sustainable and aligned with long‑term community priorities.
  • Social Investment Roadmap: Provide strategic direction to the Community Relations Representative to build out a long-term community development plan.

Leadership & Administration

  • Communications & Reporting: Deliver timely and relevant updates to Nevada Projects leadership; identify and assess political, regulatory, and community risks and opportunities.
  • Budget & Planning: Manage budgets for Community Relations, Government Affairs, and community development programs.
  • Engagement & Representation: Oversee AGA employee participation in community events—including volunteer programs and Beatty Days—and represent AGA in industry and community organizations such as the Nevada Mining Association

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Public Policy, Political Science, Communications, or a related field (Master’s or JD preferred).
  • 10+ years in external affairs, ideally within mining, oil & gas, or major infrastructure industries.
  • Strong understanding of environmental regulations and mining operations on public lands.
  • Demonstrated experience working with Tribal Nations, including navigating sovereignty and cultural heritage issues.
  • Background in complex land-use negotiations and multi-stakeholder engagement processes.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for reporting, presentations, and stakeholder interactions.
  • Valid driver’s license (required for travel to project sites).
