About the Role
The Project Metallurgist supports the delivery of metallurgical and process engineering activities across AngloGold Ashanti’s Nevada Projects portfolio. Working closely with the Metallurgy Superintendent and Manager, Processing & Metallurgy, this role contributes to metallurgical characterization, process development, engineering studies, and technical evaluations that support project advancement from concept studies through feasibility.
The Project Metallurgist plays an important role in managing metallurgical testwork programs, evaluating process alternatives, reviewing engineering deliverables, and supporting the development of technically sound and economically robust process flowsheets for gold processing projects.
Key Responsibilities
Metallurgical Studies & Project Support
- Support metallurgical activities for Concept Studies, Pre‑Feasibility Studies (PFS), and Feasibility Studies (FS) in alignment with project stage‑gate requirements.
- Assist in preparing metallurgy and processing sections of technical reports and study documentation.
- Contribute to technical evaluations supporting process selection, recovery optimization, and project economics.
- Support the development of metallurgical assumptions used in project planning and decision-making.
Metallurgical Testwork & Sample Management
- Assist in the design, execution, and management of metallurgical testwork programs with external laboratories and technical service providers.
- Conduct representative sample selection through review of geological models, drill data, and historical metallurgical test results.
- Coordinate sample collection, preparation, shipment, and chain‑of‑custody requirements.
- Evaluate laboratory results and ensure data quality, consistency, and alignment with project objectives.
Process Engineering & Technical Reviews
- Review process engineering deliverables including:
- Process Design Criteria
- Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs)
- Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs)
- General Arrangements
- Equipment Lists and Specifications
- Collaborate with EPCM partners, consultants, and vendors to review process designs and identify optimization opportunities.
- Support development and refinement of process operating philosophies and metallurgical performance models.
Economic Evaluation & Process Modeling
- Assist in developing CAPEX and OPEX inputs for engineering studies and project evaluations.
- Support preparation of recovery models, reagent consumption forecasts, mass balances, and process simulations.
- Utilize data analysis tools and metallurgical software to evaluate process performance and support project development decisions.
- Participate in trade‑off studies evaluating technical and economic impacts of alternative process configurations.
Safety, Compliance & Continuous Improvement
- Ensure all metallurgical activities are conducted in accordance with company safety standards and regulatory requirements.
- Promote safe execution of laboratory, pilot plant, and field-based metallurgical programs.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives related to testing methodologies, process performance, and study execution.
- Maintain awareness of emerging technologies and industry best practices relevant to gold processing.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mineral Processing, or related process engineering discipline.
- Advanced degree or postgraduate technical training preferred.
- Proficiency with industry-standard engineering, metallurgical, and data analysis software.
- Understanding of metallurgical testwork methodologies and process optimization principles.
- 2–5 years of experience in metallurgical engineering, process engineering, metallurgical research, or mineral processing operations.
- Experience supporting engineering studies, metallurgical test programs, or operating process plants.
- Exposure to gold processing operations preferred.
- Experience with heap leaching, HPGR, flotation, tailings management, or related processing technologies is advantageous.
- Metallurgical testwork design, management, and interpretation.
- Process flowsheet development and optimization.
- Understanding of gold recovery processes, including:
- Heap leaching
- Flotation
- Pressure oxidation (POX)
- Atmospheric oxidation
- Process modeling, mass balancing, and recovery forecasting.
- Strong technical writing and reporting skills.
- Data analysis and problem-solving capabilities.
- Understanding of scale-up principles and process development methodologies.
- Strong commitment to safety, environmental stewardship, and responsible project development.
- Demonstrates initiative, accountability, and sound technical judgment.
- Ability to work independently while effectively contributing to multidisciplinary teams.
- Strong communication and presentation skills.
- Collaborative mindset with the ability to build productive relationships across technical disciplines.
