OBJECTIVE OF THE ROLE

 

The Principal, Mining Projects, is accountable for leading the planning, governance, and delivery of Mining capital projects and studies that support safe, efficient, and sustainable mining operations. The role ensures that project engineering activities are aligned with Life of Mine planning, operational requirements, and site strategic priorities.

 

Reporting to the Director, Projects, the position provides technical leadership and governance over the project engineering function. The role is accountable for the development and management of the mining projects & studies, ensuring that projects/studies are properly prioritized, technically robust, and delivered in accordance with approved scope, schedule, cost, and safety requirements.

  • Ensure strict adherence to environmental, health, and safety (HSE) standards and local mining regulations
  • Lead development and mining construction projects including lateral developments & rehab, vertical development (raise-bore), material handling infrastructure construction, ventilation & evacuation projects, mining services construction/installations etc.
  • Leads the evaluation of mining projects, ensuring technical, financial, and operational viability from pre-feasibility studies to final engineering & construction
  • Lead and manage direct reports within the project team, ensuring each team member support operational effectiveness, design validation, and continuous improvement.
  • Conduct regular underground inspections to verify compliance with approved designs, work instructions, and QA/QC requirements for capital works.
  • Lead and mentor the projects engineering team through structured development plans, performance support, and technical guidance to build capability and support succession planning.
  • Accountable for establishing, maintaining, and enforcing departmental standards, procedures, and governance frameworks for underground capital project planning, evaluation, and execution.
  • Liaise with internal and external Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to ensure project designs and engineering solutions align with industry best practices and site standards.
  • Accountable for technical oversight, risk assessments, and engineering review for Project Work Instructions where formal procedures are not available.
  • Accountable for the development and management of the underground capital project portfolio, ensuring alignment with Life of Mine plans, operational priorities, and site strategic objectives.
  • Lead the evaluation, documentation, and submission of capital project proposals including AFEs, technical justification reports, and supporting documentation.
  • Accountable for the development and management of the annual capital budget for mining projects, including cost estimation, forecasting, and expenditure monitoring.
  • Coordinate and manage the interface between Technical Services, Major Capital, operations, and sub-contractors to ensure safe, timely, and compliant project execution.
  • Accountable for the planning and execution of mining capital projects, including sequencing, scheduling, contractor coordination, and field supervision through to project close-out.
  • Review and approve project-related engineering deliverables including miscellaneous drill designs, infrastructure layouts, backfill infrastructure plans, and service reticulation designs in collaboration with planning and engineering teams.
  • Accountable for tracking and reporting project portfolio performance through daily, weekly, and monthly reporting processes and ensuring alignment with planning schedules and operational requirements.
  • Evaluate and provide technical recommendations on project-specific technologies, contractor packages, and EPCM tendering strategies.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives that optimize capital project delivery, technical integration, and compliance with site engineering and operational standards.
  • Accountable for maintaining and updating mine services and reticulation line drawings to ensure ongoing accuracy and alignment with operational and infrastructure requirements.

 

 

 

ROLE REQUIREMENTS

 

Education & Qualification

 

  • Tertiary qualification in Mining Engineering.
  • Project management certification or formal training is advantageous.
  • Professional Engineering registration with Ghana or internationally recognized body or equivalent professional certification in construction is advantageous

 

Experience

 

  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in underground mining, including exposure to capital infrastructure, project evaluation, and mine design execution.
  • Proving experience in managing cross-functional inputs for underground project development and execution.
  • Proven track record in contributing to business planning, AFEs, and supporting the capital budgeting cycle.
  • Broad exposure to technical services and operational departments, with experience coordinating across disciplines such as mine planning, geology, ventilation, geotechnical, mining operations, and maintenance.
  • Familiarity with planning documentation standards, compliance frameworks, and reporting processes in mining operations.

 

 

Knowledge & Skills

 

  • Proficient in mine planning software such as Deswik, and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Project).
  • Previous experience in PumpSim and AutoCAD advantageous
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to design and execution detail.
  • Effective communicator with ability to facilitate meetings, coordinate across departments, and present to senior stakeholders.

Ability to interpret and develop mine infrastructure drawings and execution packages.
