The Opportunity

 

The Principal, Tailings will be responsible for defining strategies to ensure that geotechnical structures—particularly tailings dams—are fully compliant with applicable legislation requirements; are properly operated and maintained; and are aligned with the requirements and recommendations of the Engineer of Record (EoR), the Independent Tailings Review Board (ITRB), and, primarily, AGA corporate standards and normative documents. The Principal, Tailings will also be responsible for managing the provision of Tailings Engineering services and support to the AGA Obuasi Operations that delivers maximum value from AngloGold Ashanti’s assets.

 

 

 

Key Responsibilities

 

  • Modeling behaviour is consistent with the AGA Safety Vision and Values, assisting in driving a culture where Safety is our first value, and providing support for incident/accident investigations where required.
  • Responsible for the technical leadership of tailings and sediment disposal facilities at the nominated site, including filtered tailings stacks, sediment retention dams, and tailings dams.
  • Oversee all phases of the asset life cycle, including design, construction, operation, remediation, and decommissioning.
  • Responsible for the development, implementation, and control of operational procedures for geotechnical structures, with a strong focus on safe operation, monitoring, and the safe execution of remediation and expansion projects.
  • Establishes and maintains direct engagement with the EoR, ITRB, and the second line of defense, while defining structured reporting frameworks for senior leadership.
  • Ensures full alignment with the principles and requirements of the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM), including the implementation of recommendations and compliance obligations.
  • Governance – Conduct quarterly monitoring inspections on all TSF’s – in support of due diligence and maintaining standards with regards to ongoing deposition. Also participate as required in the annual CTO TSF audits and support corrective actions.
  • Operational Support – Provide leadership to all tailings operations at the nominated site on TSF management and follow up on due diligence discrepancies. Lead and support General Managers in operational management decisions for tailings budgets. Lead remedial actions as needed.
  • Strategic and Long-Term Opportunities – Provide input to TSF LOM planning with regards to strategy, capacity maintenance and eventually closure.
  • Design and Projects – Participate in multi-discipline studies on complex TSF solutions – in both existing and new TSF designs.
  • Business Improvement and Benchmarking - Conducting ongoing technical appraisals, including identification of improvement opportunities, for all operations, with regards to opex and capital optimization.
  • Providing resourcing and planning into the support of the Tailings and Geotechnical components of the AngloGold Ashanti strategic and business plans.
  • Support on building, developing and leading an effective and increasingly capable on-site TSF Operational Team.

 

 

Qualifications and Professional Credentials

 

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering is required.
  • A postgraduate degree in Geotechnical Engineering is advantageous and will strengthen your candidacy.

 

 

Experience and Skills

 

  • A minimum of 10 years’ experience in tailings or geotechnical engineering
  • Proven experience in the design, review, and optimization of tailings storage facilities, saddle dams, buttresses, and drainage systems across all project phases (concept, PFS, FS, and detailed design).
  • Strong experience with GISTM, tailings operational management and governance, and international guidelines such as CDA, NBR, MAC, ANCOLD and ICOLD.
  • Strong capability to implement and oversee technical governance frameworks, ensuring that detailed engineering and construction align with design premises, standards, and key parameters defined in PFS and FS stages.
  • Proven ability to drive cost and schedule optimization through value engineering and practical, constructible design solutions that ensure feasibility within project constraints
  • Knowledge of geotechnical risk analysis, dam stability, and safety principles, with capacity to validate critical parameters and ensure robust, compliant designs during both design and construction phases.
  • Strong capability to assess complex engineering data, challenge design assumptions, and make informed decisions balancing technical rigor, constructability, and business priorities.
