OBJECTIVE OF THE ROLE

 

  • The Specialist, Mining Engineering supports the planning, design, and technical execution of mining projects by assisting with project designs, mine planning activities, feasibility studies, cost estimation, and the review of technical deliverables.
  • The role provides technical support in developing project scopes, schedules, and engineering solutions while ensuring compliance with safety and mining standards, company procedures, and project requirements.
  • Through effective collaboration with cross-functional teams, the Specialist contributes to the successful delivery of mining projects, supports project optimisation initiatives, and promotes continuous improvement in project planning and execution.

 

ROLE ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Actively support full compliance with site safety requirements and foster a culture of zero harm across all activities.
  • Develop and coordinate detailed plans and schedules for lateral and vertical development, access rehabilitation, and bulk excavation within the mining projects areas.
  • Prepare technical analyses, engineering assessments, and project documentation for pre-feasibility and feasibility studies, final engineering, and construction to support mining project evaluation.
  • Coordinate technically between operations, project teams, and consultants to facilitate the planning, execution, and review of mining studies and project deliverables.
  • Support the management of project service providers, vendors, and consultants by monitoring performance, reviewing deliverables, and facilitating timely resolution of technical issues.
  • Prepare, review, and verify mining engineering deliverables for technical accuracy and compliance with project standards.
  • Incorporate study outcomes into mining infrastructure and services plans.
  • Design project-related engineering deliverables and incorporate study outcomes into the mine plan, including services and infrastructure.
  • Provide technical support on mining engineering standards, design, installation, and commissioning activities.
  • Support project governance by ensuring engineering documentation, project deliverables, and work processes comply with the AGA Project Management Framework.
  • Develop, maintain, and implement project planning documentation, risk assessments, and project work instructions to support compliance with project planning standards and the safe execution of mining projects.
  • Contribute critical mining engineering input to scoping, pre-feasibility, and definitive feasibility studies.
  • Actively participate in project reviews and share technical knowledge and lessons learned.
  • Conduct site inspections and monitor underground project execution to verify compliance with approved designs, schedules, and safety standards.
  • Assist in design reviews and stakeholder coordination to support capital project assessments.
  • Track project costs and prepare cost performance reports highlighting budget status and potential variances.
  • Provide support within the project team to ensure operational effectiveness, design validation, and continuous improvement.
  • Develop and verify drill designs, charge plans, and infrastructure documentation.
  • Identify opportunities for continuous improvement and implement initiatives that enhance compliance, efficiency, and project delivery.
  • Support departmental guidelines and procedures related to project planning and design.
  • Support training and mentoring plans within the project and planning teams.
  • Support yearly, monthly, and weekly schedule integration for project execution.
  • Coordinate with development and infrastructure design teams to ensure project scope and sequencing align with execution requirements.
  • Provide mine planning data to enable quarterly updates of the rolling 18-month plan to be produced on time.
  • Support weekly and 12-week schedules, reconciliation processes, schedule compliance, and daily and monthly reporting.
  • Provide input on void management, ventilation requirements, ground support considerations, geotechnical assessments, and emergency planning.
  • Support drill and blast design documentation including stope charge designs, close-outs, and remote plans.

 

ROLE REQUIREMENTS

 

Education & Qualification

 

  • Tertiary qualification in Mining Engineering or a related discipline.
  • A post degree qualification would be considered a strong asset.
  • Additional training in project management or underground infrastructure planning is desirable.
  • PMP or GHIE certification is an advantage.
  • Valid Ghanaian manual driver's licence as required by site.

 

Experience

 

  • Minimum 4 years’ proven experience in underground mining and mine planning, with exposure to infrastructure or project-focused roles.
  • Working knowledge of capital project evaluation, mine services design, and underground project execution.
  • Exposure to alliance-style contractor-owner environments and cross-functional collaboration.

 

Knowledge & Skills

 

  • Proficient in Deswik CAD and MS Excel, with familiarity with Deswik Scheduler an advantage.
  • AutoCAD capability.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to support planning discussions and documentation.
  • Analytical mindset with attention to design accuracy, compliance, and execution requirements.
  • Understanding of project scopes, sequencing, and cost alignment within operational schedules.
  • Ability to work underground as required, including travel between work areas.
  • Capable of using a computer for extended periods in an office environment.
  • Physically fit to meet site medical and functional capacity requirements.
