Role Context:


The VP, Operations at Obuasi Mine is a pivotal leadership position responsible for driving integrated operational performance across the mining value chain. As the mine advances towards improved productivity and operational predictability, this role commands a strategic and hands-on approach to strengthen underground mining results, contractor partnership effectiveness, and enterprise-wide collaboration. The mandate is to embed discipline and accountability at all levels for consistent execution of the mine plan, ensuring excellence in safety and environmental stewardship.

 

Role Purpose:


Reporting directly to the Managing Director, the Vice President of Operations leads all operational functions including Geology, Mine Technical Services, Mining, Processing, and Engineering. This role is accountable for delivering the approved business plan safely and reliably by boosting cross-functional alignment and operational discipline. Leading a high-caliber operations leadership team, the VP is instrumental in fostering a culture of ownership, transparency, and disciplined execution that supports sustainable business performance and continuous productivity gains.

 

Key Responsibilities:

 

  • Exemplify visible and unwavering leadership in safe production practices, ensuring safety is a shared priority across all operations.
  • Implement and verify critical controls and operational standards to proactively identify and manage material risks.
  • Maintain full compliance with environmental regulations and safety legislation while promoting sustainable operational practices.
  • Drive alignment and integration of all operational functions—Mining, Geology, Technical Services, Engineering, and Processing—into a cohesive, single operating plan that delivers optimal mine-wide performance.
  • Identify cross-functional constraints and lead resolution initiatives to ensure seamless collaboration across departments.
  • Translate strategic business plans into clear operational commitments with performance objectives measurable on a daily, weekly, and monthly cadence.
  • Utilize leading performance indicators and root cause analysis to manage variances and implement recovery actions transparently and accountably.
  • Hold mining operational leaders accountable for meeting objectives related to development, stoping, production, productivity, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Ensure the mine is equipped with appropriate technical capability, resources, and systems, proactively identifying and addressing underground constraints.
  • Provide technical and operational assurance to challenge and resolve complex issues without undermining front-line leadership accountability.
  • Define and enforce clear accountability frameworks between mine operations and contractors, overseeing contractor performance, capability, resourcing, and adherence to agreed key performance indicators.
  • Foster robust governance and escalation processes to address systemic contractor challenges collaboratively with senior contractor leadership and commercial teams.
  • Develop and manage annual budgets and operational plans aligned with production, operating cost, and capital commitments.
  • Actively identify and manage operational risks and opportunities in alignment with the Life of Mine (LOM) plan.
  • Continuously pursue productivity improvements, cost optimization, and asset value enhancements through innovation and technology deployment.
  • Build a fit-for-purpose Operations organization with clearly defined roles, authorities, and accountabilities, nurturing leadership development and succession planning within the team.
  • Establish and promote a culture of ownership, transparency, urgency, and disciplined execution that supports long-term operational excellence.
  • Engage constructively with the Managing Director, Africa Business Unit, corporate functions, regulators, and external stakeholders to represent operational interests and ensure aligned priorities.
  • Embed and continuously improve operating systems and processes to eliminate systemic constraints and sustain operational performance.

 

Qualifications:

 

  • Tertiary qualification in Mining Engineering or a related mining/technical discipline.
  • Professional and statutory mining qualifications appropriate for senior operational leadership roles.
  • Eligibility to meet applicable Ghanaian statutory requirements where required.

 

Experience, Skills & Competencies:

 

  • Minimum of 20 years' relevant mining experience, including extensive senior leadership roles in large-scale mechanised hard-rock underground mining operations.
  • Proven track record of leading complex underground mining operations through phases of ramp-up, turnaround, optimization, or significant performance improvement.
  • Demonstrated experience managing and leading senior functional teams including Mine Managers and technical/operational leaders.
  • Significant expertise in overseeing major underground mining contractors, ensuring contractor performance excellence, effective governance, appropriate resourcing, and productive commercial relationships.
  • Accomplished history of improving operational performance and consistently delivering on production, development, cost, and productivity targets.
  • Strong capability in integrating Mining, Technical Services, Geology, Engineering, and Processing functions to achieve whole-of-operation outcomes.
  • Experience working in African or similarly complex operational environments with diverse stakeholder landscapes is highly desirable.
  • Exceptional leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, fostering collaboration and engagement at all organizational levels.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment, making sound decisions with accountability and integrity.
