ROLE PURPOSE

This position is responsible for all safety processes and procedures on Surface, including third parties operating on site surface operations. Reporting to the site Safety Superintendent – Surface, the surface safety officer enforces company safety policy and work procedures. This position works with the site superintendent, company surface safety officer, and general superintendent to complete accident investigations to ensure a safe working environment for all personnel and third parties

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

 

  • Identify and correct unsafe work practices or conditions before accident occur, through regular inspection and fostering the safety attitude among the workforce during visits.
  • Assist in conducting planned inspection & audits using checklist periodically, aimed at evaluating compliance with standards and checking the state of safety of all equipment.
  • Assist in ensuring that all the statutory requirements that have a bearing on occupational health and Safety are adhered to on Surface.
  • Participate in all inspections and inquiries by the Mine Inspectors.
  • Facilitate a formal risk assessment for operational activities and ensure that all significant risks identified from the risk assessment as well as all other sources, such as audit reports, are captured and appropriate corrective actions are planned and implemented.
  • Assist in conducting investigating all incidents, recommending and enforcing the implementation of remedial measures to prevent recurrence.
  • Ensure compliance in conducting periodic planned job observations and planned inspections on various categories of employees to enhance safe work practices.
  • Assist in conducting periodic on-the-job training for the various categories of workers to heighten their safety awareness to ensure they carry out their tasks in a safe manner.
  • Assist in ensuring that PPEs supplied to workmen and other working equipment and tools meet the company’s standards and enforce their use where necessary.
  • Attend, participate and / or facilitate safety meetings including Safety Committee Meetings and Toolbox Meetings
  • Enforce all health and safety protocols as required by AGAG and statutory bodies.

 

QUALIFICATION, EXPERIENCE AND TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES

 

Qualification:

  • Must have a Degree in Engineering or Physical Sciences or similar qualification from a recognised institution.
  • Must have either ISO 45001 internal or lead auditor’s certification.
  • Must have a certification in Process Safety Engineering or Management.
  • Must have a certification in incident investigation methodologies such as IIP, Taproot etc.
  • Health and Safety Certificate of Competency from Minerals Commission of Ghana will be an advantage.
  • Must poses a valid Ghanaian driving licence.

 

Experience:

  • Must have at least 4 - 8 years working experience in the mining industry.
  • Construction Safety, Green and Brown fields projects, project management.
  • Must have experience in application of Health and Safety principle in Mine Processing Plant, Surface infrastructure, basic surface engineering and maintenance workshop.
  • Must be able to drive manual transmission vehicles.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office applications.
