PURPOSE OF THE ROLE:
The role will primarily focus on operations within the underground mines of Nyakanga, Geita Hill, and Star and Comet. It involves close collaboration with operational stakeholders, the technical team, and contractors to ensure seamless underground operations. A key responsibility of the role is to support, develop, and train an efficient local team while implementing industry best practices for Drill & Blast within the underground mining environment. 


 
QUALIFICATIONS:
•    Bachelor of Mining Engineering preferred not essential.
•    Blasting Certificate.
•    Site Entry requirements which may include mines Health Surveillance.

 

EXPERIENCE:
•    10+ years' proven experience in underground mine production with extensive experience on drilling and blasting in a senior role. 
•    Experience working with international mining contractors managing surface and / or underground drilling and blasting operations will be highly regarded.
•    Proven ability to follow daily/weekly/monthly plans and achieve targets set for both KPI’s and compliance to plan.
•    Proven track record of managing and leading large and diverse teams
•    Hands on approach and service orientated outlook.

 

 

MAIN OR KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:


Safety
•    Establish and maintain processes to provide a safe workplace for all employees and external service providers undertaking work within area of accountability. Abide by all site safety procedures.


Training & Coaching
•    Provide on the job training and coaching to national Drill & Blast engineers, graduates, and support drilling and blasting operators in achieving desired outcomes.
•    Develop, implement, and evaluate on-the-job training programmes for junior Drill & Blast engineers. 

 

Planning and Execution
•    Develop UG Drill and Blast standard operating procedures. 
•    Monitoring drilling and blasting performance ensuring actual outcome is in line with design and that production targets are met in line with priorities.
•    QA/QC of production drilling and charging activities through the application of experience, visual and technology.
•    Provide input and oversee stope design, drill plans, prep plans, charge plans, drilling and charging activities.
•    Ensure Drill and Blast plans are prepared in conjunction with the operational team, technical team, and contractor to ensure that it is delivered on time, of quality and as per the required priority.
•    Attend Mine Operations Meetings and Stope Note Meetings, interacting effectively with the technical, operational and contractor team. 
•    Lead the stope closure process and compile closure notes to be presented to all stakeholders outlining what was done well and improvements to be made, prior to signoff by all stakeholders. 
•    Review and provide input to the weekly and monthly operational underground plans ensuring that it is in accordance with the company’s objective to provide sufficient ore feed for the plant.
•    Update Drill and Blast guidelines in line with industry best practice and technology.
•    Optimize drill and blast parameters and resources to improve on drilling and blasting efficiencies and cost.
•    Working with the short, medium and long-term underground planning technical team to ensure that schedules generated are in line with budget and long term mine plan.

 

Environmental
•    Establish and maintain processes to ensure that all environmental risks and emerging issues are identified, and mitigation plans to put in place.

 


Delivery
•    Commit best endeavours and full capability to deliver the work assigned to you by your manager or manager once removed.
•    Collaborate across all disciplines where rigorous engagement and interaction is expected.
•    Identify safety risks and resolve emerging issues ensuring that appropriate focus and resources are available to achieve safety objectives.
•    Interpret data to initiate and drive operational improvements as required.
