The Africa Business Unit manages four operations in Tanzania, Ghana and Guinea producing in excess of 1.1 Moz per year. The Business Unit Technical team is a small, dedicated team of technical and operational specialists based in Australia who provide direct support to the operations.

Reporting to the Underground Mining Manager (Africa), the Senior Specialist: Underground Mining (Africa)provides tactical and operational support, that delivers maximum value for AngloGold Ashanti’s operating assets and projects in Africa. 
 

The role also provides direct output support to both Site and Regional business units in the identification and adoption of relevant discipline strategy, provision of competent technical support to the operations, provision of governance/assurance and representation of AGA on all matters relating to the discipline including the interaction and benchmarking with peers in the industry.  
 

This position requires on-site presence with quarterly travel to the operations. Applicants should be prepared for international travel. This is an excellent opportunity for the right candidate to be based in Perth and have the ability to travel and work in Africa in diverse and challenging operations. 

Accountabilities: 

• Provide coverage for any resource/capability gap within a mining technical team or project team 

• Provide alternate Strategic Options for the assets supported, influencing on alternate long-term mine plan options that can add value including ones that may be more difficult to manage  

• Lead and assist sites with mine planning, mine designs, schedule and annual budget preparations as required 

• Mining Lead on technical studies as they occur for the sites supported with major mining related projects at either conceptual, pre-feasibility or feasibility stage 

• Analyse the operations compliance to budgets/forecasts both in terms of production and cost 

• Provide technical assistance and support to sites  

• Provide support to the Senior Manager Mining and his team.  

• Assist as required with any Underground Planning support on behalf of Underground Mining Managers 

• Promote innovation and the development and adoption of new technologies 

• Provide support and facilitate processes with Underground Mining experts to develop benchmark metrics, reports and standards for performance measurement  

• Providing support (and reviewing as required) to the Ghana and Tanzania operations, annual budget, including cookbooks. 

About You

• A degree qualification in a relevant mining-related discipline or other. 

• At least 8 years relevant experience in UG mining industry 

• High skill level with UG mine planning software preferably Deswik 

• Demonstrate competency in generate Budget Planning schedule and Reserve process 

• Sound practical understanding of the entire mining value chain including mining, geotechnical, metallurgy and projects 

• Ability to take a whole-of-business perspective in managing multiple competing priorities and reconciling these with the Company’s strategic priorities 

• Demonstrated strategic and analytic thinking 

• A capacity in financial decision making and Risk Management 

• Demonstrated capacity to make sound short-term tactical decisions – quickly assembling and interpreting data to successfully action priorities  

• Worked in an expatriate role and has demonstrated capability and willingness to explore and embrace different cultures 

• Effective interpersonal skills with the ability to liaise with people at all levels within the organisation. 

• The ability to obtain a National Police Clearance. 

• Have existing and ongoing valid Australian working rights (Mandatory).
