Reporting to the General Manager-Tropicana, the Manager Open Pit Mining oversees the safe and efficient execution of the Tropicana mining strategy. The role focuses on delivering the annual budget, optimizing long-term value, and managing contractor performance.

 

Key responsibilities include ensuring operational compliance, hitting production targets, and developing workforce capability, all while maintaining strict safety and environmental standards.


Accountabilities:

  • Leads the development of long-term mine designs and schedules to maximise value and ensure operational sustainability. It involves providing strategic recommendations on cash flow and risk trade-offs to guide mining strategies. Additionally, the position ensures that technical planning and field execution are fully integrated to meet production targets.

 

  • Developing the annual mining budget in line with long-term plans, maintaining strict cost control, and identifying budget variances to create mitigation plans. Additionally, it ensures accurate reporting and manages updates to rehabilitation liability models.

 

  • Leading open pit operations to hit safety, production, and cost KPIs while directly overseeing contractor performance to ensure they meet quality and schedule requirements.

  • You’ll also drive the use of integrated planning systems and continuous improvement processes across the entire department.

  • Working closely with the business units, assist in the development of the strategic plans which includes driving a change in thinking and assisting in consolidation.



About You

  • A degree qualification in a relevant mining-related discipline or other.

  • Minimum 10+ years mining experience, including extensive open pit operational leadership

  • Significant experience managing contractors in large-scale mining operations

  • Demonstrated success in production delivery outcomes and managing operational budgets

  • Unrestricted Quarry Manager’s Certificate of Competency (WA)

  • Eligibility for appointments as Quarry Manager or Site Senior Executive (SSE) under WHS regulations

  • Strong track record of practical implementation of analytical tools and analysis.

  • Demonstrated strategic and analytic thinking

  • A capacity in financial decision making and Risk Management

  • Strong interpersonal, influencing and communication skills

  • Effective interpersonal skills with the ability to liaise with people at all levels within the organisation.

  • The ability to obtain National Police Clearance.

  • Have existing and ongoing valid Australian working rights (Mandatory).
