The Obuasi Redevelopment Project has attained its original project schedule to become a modern efficient processing and underground mechanized operation, and it is now moving to achieving study state operation with the final aim of achieving 5000 tonnes per day processing.

ROLE PURPOSE

 

The Economic Development Officer – Agri Business works under the guidance of the Economic Development Superintendent to implement comprehensive and sustainable economic development strategies.

 

The primary aim of this role is to contribute significantly to the diversification of the Obuasi economy beyond mining. By doing so, it enhances the community's resilience, offers alternative livelihoods, and fosters a sustainable socio-economic environment. This, in turn, helps the Obuasi Mine to secure its social license to operate, ensuring that the community views the mine as a partner in long-term development rather than a transient economic player.

 

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

 

  • Assess risks for all tasks and ensure they are controlled before and during task execution.
  • Report all incidents and ensure they have been investigated and corrective actions completed on time.
  • Act on all corrective actions assigned and ensure timely completion.
  • Investigate all environmental incidents in assigned work areas and prepare reports with recommendations for the Departmental Manager for onward submission to the Environmental Manager or his representative.
  • Implement, monitor, and evaluate agribusiness programmes tailored to local needs, including the development of agricultural enterprises, improvement of farming practices, and promotion of value addition in value chains.
  • Design and implement food crop programmes aimed at supporting local farmers in improving productivity and market access.
  • Develop and execute initiatives focused on cash crop production, ensuring sustainable farming practices and increased farmer incomes.
  • Establish and manage livestock and animal husbandry projects to enhance food security and create economic opportunities.
  • Innovate and implement livelihood enhancement programs to improve community resilience and economic sustainability.
  • Support the formation and strengthening of farmers' cooperatives and Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs).
  • Collaborate with financial institutions to facilitate microfinance and credit access for smallholder farmers and agribusinesses.
  • Develop robust monitoring and evaluation frameworks to track progress and impact, using data-driven insights to adjust strategies and ensure programme relevance.
  • Prepare regular reports on project outcomes, lessons learned, and best practices, providing feedback to stakeholders for future planning.

 

QUALIFICATION, EXPERIENCE AND TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES

 

Qualification

  • First degree in Agriculture, Agro-Processing Technology, Food Processing Engineering, or related tertiary qualification

 

Experience

  • At least three years’ experience in a similar line of work
  • Proficiency in the use of data analytics applications

 

Technical Competencies

  • Participatory methodologies and their application
  • Practical experience in the implementation of agriculture/alternative livelihood programmes / projects in a mining setting
  • Knowledge of internationally applicable standards relevant to sustainable development (SDGs, IFC standards on Social Sustainability, VPSHR, GEITI, etc.)
  • Good knowledge of shared value-driven community investment

 

Other Competencies

  • Strong negotiation skills
  • Knowledge of the development planning process of the MMDAs
  • A good knowledge of national enterprise development programmes and policies
  • Practical experience in agribusiness
  • Practical experience in the SME sector
  • Ability to work in a team
