AngloGold Ashanti (Ghana) Limited, Obuasi Gold Mine is currently near completion of the redevelopment phase to become a modern, efficient and long-term profitable operation. The underground mining operation has been fully mechanized and designed to produce up to an average maximum of 5,000 t/day of ore mined.

We are seeking an experienced and self-motivated person to join our dedicated team as per the details below:

ROLE PURPOSE

 

To maximize equipment availability and reliability, minimize operational risk, and ensure sustainable asset performance through strategic planning, technical leadership, and compliance oversight. This role is critical in bridging the gap between engineering theory and practical, on-the-ground execution in a high-risk, high-value environment like mining. The Engineering Manager – Technical is accountable for the development and implementation of all technical Quality Assurance and Control of Surface and Underground Fixed Plant Infrastructure maintenance, including the Surface Processing Plant, Surface Mine Infrastructure, and Surface Support Infrastructure, Underground Mine Infrastructure, Hoists and Shaft Infrastructure and Heavy Mobile Equipment through the application of operational engineering policies, standards, systems and procedures to maximise plant availability in a sustainable cost-effective manner and minimize operational risks in order to meet the business’ strategic objective. The role holder is also accountable for providing engineering services support to achieve the strategic objectives of the mine, including enforcement of legal compliance and training.

 

 

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

 

Safety

  • Drive sound principles of Health and Safety in line with AngloGold Ashanti’s standards and procedures.
  • Critical Controls Review and Supervisor Workplace Visits / Inspections
  • Assess risks for all tasks and ensure they are controlled before and during task execution.
  • Report all incidents and ensure they have been investigated and corrective actions completed on time.
  • 100% Compliance to set OHS KPIs and ensure direct reports also comply with same

Maintenance Planning

  • Ensure that all equipment and infrastructure are maintained proactively and efficiently.
  • Develop and oversee preventive and predictive maintenance schedules.
  • Coordinate shutdowns and major overhauls.
  • Optimize maintenance resources (labor, parts, tools).
  • Minimize unplanned downtime and extend equipment life.

Asset Reliability

  • Improve the performance and availability of critical assets.
  • Implement reliability-centered maintenance (RCM) strategies.
  • Analyze failure modes and root causes.
  • Use data analytics to monitor asset health and performance.
  • Recommend design or operational changes to improve reliability.

Compliance

  • Ensure all engineering and maintenance activities meet legal, safety, and environmental standards.
  • Ensure compliance with mining regulations, OEM standards, and internal policies.
  • Conduct audits and inspections.
  • Maintain documentation for regulatory reporting.
  • Lead incident investigations and corrective actions.

Training

  • To build technical capacity and ensure safe, competent execution of maintenance tasks.
  • Develop and deliver training programs for maintenance personnel.
  • Ensure certification and competency of tradespeople and engineers.
  • Promote a culture of continuous improvement and learning.
  • Support succession planning and career development.

Reliability & Maintenance

  • Lead the Analysis of equipment performance data (e.g., Availability, MTBF, MTTR) to identify bad actors and improve reliability metrics.
  • Oversee condition monitoring programs and ensure KPIs are in place to assess effectiveness
  • Implement defect elimination processes including root cause analysis (RCA) and failure reporting systems.
  • Ensure compliance with safety, quality, and industry standards in all maintenance activities
  • Lead and drive the AGA Asset Maturity Assessment and Asset Management framework

Planning & Budgeting

  • Prepare and manage annual OPEX and CAPEX budgets, ensuring cost control and alignment with strategic goals.
  • Coordinate shutdown planning and ensure resources are optimized for minimal disruption.
  • Monitor and report on performance metrics, including PM compliance, downtime, and cost savings.
  • Lead and drive the AGA Work Management System on site

Technical Services & Support

  • Provide technical guidance on engineering issues across departments (e.g., operations, QA/QC, HSE).
  • Support plant improvements and expansions, including vendor coordination and technology upgrades.
  • Ensure engineering documentation and systems are up-to-date and accessible.
  • Provide technical input on regulatory changes and their impact on engineering design and operations
  • Ensure engineering standards and procedures reflect current legal and ethical expectations

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Collaborate with internal departments (HR, Procurement, Finance, IT) to ensure coordinated service delivery.
  • Engage with external vendors and technology suppliers to maintain equipment standards and service quality.
  • Advise senior leadership on reliability risks, opportunities, and strategic initiatives.

Performance & Reporting

  • Track KPIs related to training effectiveness, compliance rates, and audit outcomes
  • Report regularly to Senior Manager - Engineering on legal compliance status and associated performance metrics
  • Benchmark practices against industry standards and recommend improvements
  • Monitor and report on performance metrics, including PM compliance, downtime, and cost savings

Cost 

  • Drive operational cost control and maintain expenditure within approved budgets
  • Monitor and report on cost performance and cost savings
  • Institute cost control measures for section

 

 

 

QUALIFICATION, EXPERIENCE AND TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES

 

Qualification

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Maintenance, Telecommunication, Computer Engineering, etc.) with 10+ years of relevant experience.
  • Diploma in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Maintenance, etc. per Reg. 51 &54 LI2182) with minimum of 12 years of relevant experience.
  • Master's degree in Engineering Management or Business Administration will an added advantage

 

Experience

  • 10+ years in engineering roles, with at least 5 years in a managerial (superintendent) position
  • Hands on experience in Reliability Centered Maintenance
  • Industry Experience: Extensive experience in managing engineering and maintenance operations in a complex mining environment, including declines, hoisting shafts, underground and surface infrastructure, and gold processing plants.

 

Statutory Qualifications

  • Must have an Engineering Manager or Unit Manager or Engineering Superintendent Certificate of Competence from the Inspectorate Division of the Mineral Commission (IDMC).

 

Certifications

  • Must have a Professional Engineer (PE) license from either the Ghana Institution of Engineering (GhIE) or Institution of Engineering and Technology, Ghana (IET-GH)
  • Project Management Certification (will be an added advantage)
