OBJECTIVE OF THE ROLE

 

  • The Technician, Mechanical - MI reports to the Supervisor, Mechanical - MI and is responsible for the safe, reliable, and efficient inspection, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, overhaul, testing, and commissioning of overhead cranes, workshop machinery, laboratory equipment, ventilation fans, pumps, compressors, and associated mechanical systems.
  • The role executes preventive, predictive, corrective, and breakdown maintenance activities to maximize equipment availability and reliability while minimizing operational downtime.
  • The incumbent diagnoses equipment faults, performs mechanical repairs and precision maintenance, conducts condition inspections, and supports continuous improvement initiatives to ensure that all assets operate safely and efficiently in accordance with OEM recommendations and AngloGold Ashanti engineering standards.

 

ROLE ACCOUNTABILITIES

 

  • Conduct risk assessments prior to task execution and comply with all safety regulations and procedures.
  • Participate in workplace inspections and safety observations, and report hazards and incidents while ensuring corrective actions are implemented.
  • Comply with the Environmental Management Plan, prevent spillages and contamination, report environmental incidents and deviations, and follow environmental procedures during operations.
  • Work closely with supervisors, operators, and contractors, and participate in training and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Perform planned, predictive, preventive, corrective, and breakdown maintenance on overhead cranes, workshop machinery, laboratory crushers and mills, industrial ventilation fans, pumps, compressors, industrial washers, industrial dryers, and associated mechanical equipment.
  • Inspect, troubleshoot, overhaul, repair, assemble, install, align, test, and commission mechanical equipment in accordance with OEM specifications, engineering standards, and statutory requirements.
  • Maintain and repair workshop equipment including lathes, milling machines, drilling machines, pedestal grinders, slotting machines, power hacksaws, and other machine shop equipment to ensure safe and reliable operation.
  • Maintain and overhaul industrial washing and drying equipment, including drive systems, bearings, motors, pumps, valves, steam, and auxiliary mechanical components.
  • Perform maintenance and repairs of pumps, air compressors, ventilation fans, overhead cranes, laboratory sample preparation equipment, and other rotating machinery to maximize equipment availability and reliability.
  • Conduct fault diagnosis, vibration checks, alignment, balancing, component replacement, and performance verification to identify defects and prevent equipment failures.
  • Carry out routine inspections and statutory checks on overhead cranes, workshop equipment, and rotating machinery, reporting defects and recommending corrective actions.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records, inspection reports, work orders, equipment history, and spare parts usage in the CMMS.
  • Support plant shutdowns, major maintenance activities, equipment commissioning, reliability improvement initiatives, and root cause investigations to improve asset performance.
  • Ensure all maintenance activities are performed in compliance with PTW, LOTO, lifting procedures, safety regulations, environmental standards, and AngloGold Ashanti engineering standards while maintaining high standards of housekeeping and workmanship.
  • Execute work effectively to prevent rework and reduce waste.
  • Ensure timely execution of maintenance and operational tasks.
  • Support operators to operate equipment within safe working limits and identify and escalate potential equipment failures.
  • Report to the Mechanical Supervisor on all operational and maintenance issues.
  • Stop work or equipment if unsafe conditions exist and report immediately.

 

ROLE REQUIREMENTS

 

Education & Qualification

 

  • Technician II Certificate or equivalent, or
  • Associate degree or technical diploma in Engineering Technology or related field, or
  • City and Guilds certificate part II
  • MINCOM certification will be an added advantage

 

Experience

 

  • Minimum of two years' post-qualification experience in maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, overhaul, testing, and commissioning of overhead cranes, workshop machinery, laboratory equipment, ventilation fans, pumps, compressors, and associated mechanical systems in the mining or heavy industrial sector.
  • Proven hands-on experience maintaining overhead cranes, workshop machinery, laboratory crushers and mills, ventilation fans, pumps, compressors, and rotating equipment.
  • Experience executing planned, preventive, corrective, and breakdown maintenance, including fault diagnosis, alignment, commissioning, and equipment reliability improvement.

  • Demonstrated competency in the maintenance, troubleshooting, overhaul, alignment, testing, and commissioning of overhead cranes, workshop equipment, crushers, mills, ventilation fans, pumps, compressors, and associated mechanical systems.
