AngloGold Ashanti (Ghana) Limited, Obuasi Gold Mine is currently near completion of the redevelopment phase to become a modern, efficient and long-term profitable operation. The underground mining operation has been fully mechanized and designed to produce up to an average maximum of 5,000 t/day of ore mined.

OBJECTIVE OF THE ROLE
To coordinate and integrate occupational health, clinical and medical services, and operational risk management at Obuasi Gold Mine in collaboration and liaison with Medical and Health Service providers. The role ensures compliance with company standards, national legislation, and international best practice while supporting workforce health, fitness for work, disease prevention, and medical emergency preparedness.
The incumbent will act as the key liaison between site management, occupational health teams, medical service providers, regulators, and community/public health stakeholders.
ROLE ACCOUNTABILITIES
Ensure compliance with Safety KPIs including
- Critical Controls Review
- Supervisor Workplace Visits / Inspections
- Positive / Hazards Observation and Reporting
- Planned Task Observations.
- Risks Assessment for all tasks and ensuring they are controlled before and during task execution.
- Reporting all incidents and ensuring they have been investigated and corrective actions completed on time.
- Acting on all corrective actions assigned and ensuring timely completion.
Occupational Health Management
- In conjunction with the Occupational Health Team, support the implementation of the site Occupational Health Programme aligned with company standards and regulatory requirements.
- Coordinate risk based Occupational Medical Surveillance program (noise-induced hearing loss, silica exposure, illnesses from exposures to diesel particulate matter, vibration, heat stress, welding fumes, etc.) in collaboration with the site Hygienist, AGA Health Foundation and other service providers as appropriate.
- Rationalize Occupational Medicine Surveillance program in support of Technical Line Management and HR
- Participate in the interrogation / analysis of results following Occupational Medical Surveillance examinations, as well as post injury functional ability determination.
- Monitor occupational risks in collaboration with Hygiene and Safety teams.
- Track and report occupational illnesses and trends and use it to prepare a Job Capability Profile (JCP).
- Support fitness-to-work assessments and return-to-work programs following illness and / or injury.
Clinical & Primary Healthcare Coordination
- Monitor and assure that quality and standards of care delivered at site medical facilities are aligned with Service Level Agreements and other contracts.
- Liaise with onsite clinics, paramedics, and external medical providers.
- Coordinate emergency medical response readiness (including trauma management).
- Oversee medical evacuations where required.
Infectious Disease & Public Health Management
- In collaboration with the AGA Health Foundation, and other service providers (e.g. AGAMal), implement and monitor infectious disease control programs (e.g., malaria, TB, HIV, respiratory diseases, etc.).
- Develop outbreak management protocols.
- Liaise with public health authorities and medical service providers where required.
Data Management & Reporting
- Oversee the maintenance of confidential medical records in compliance with legal requirements.
- In collaboration with the Occupational Health and Occupational Hygiene Teams Analyze health data trends and present reports to site leadership.
- Participate in the investigation of Occupational disease cases and represent the company on compensation commissions
- Track KPIs such as:
- Occupational disease rates
- Medical treatment cases (due to Illness)
- Lost time due to illness
- Health surveillance compliance
- Others.
Regulatory & Compliance Interface
- Ensure compliance with national mining and occupational health legislation.
- Support external audits and inspections.
- Interface with regulators and statutory authorities as required.
Controls for Non-communicable Disease and Employee Wellbeing.
- Monitor and trend employee wellbeing programs.
- Participate in the management of Employee Assistance Program in collaboration with the Health Service Provider, Human Resource Department and applicable stakeholders.
- Advise on lifestyle choices and activities based on trends of medical status of workforce.
Community Health Interface (when required)
- Coordinate company-supported community health programs.
- Liaise with local hospitals and referral facilities.
- Support community health risk assessments related to mining activities.
ROLE REQUIREMENTS
Education & Qualification
- A master’s degree in public health or occupational health.
- A Specialist Medical Practitioner or above recognised by Ghana College of Physicians.
- Recognised by Ghana Medical and Dental Council
Experience
- A medical Practitioner with not less than fifteen (15) years’ experience.
- Worked in an extractive industry hospital for not less than 3 years.
Knowledge & Skills
- A valid Ghanaian driving license and be able to drive a manual transmission vehicle.
- Must be in a position of managing or supervising clinicians as part of career progress.
- Strong understanding of mining occupational hazards
- Knowledge of relevant legislation and international standards
- Understanding of Occupational Exposures and related sicknesses
- Good with MS suites
