AngloGold Ashanti (Ghana) Limited, Obuasi Gold Mine is currently near completion of the redevelopment phase to become a modern, efficient and long-term profitable operation. The underground mining operation has been fully mechanized and designed to produce up to an average maximum of 5,000 t/day of ore mined.

OBJECTIVE OF THE ROLE

 

The Mechanical Technician – Fixed Plant reports to the Engineering Supervisor and is responsible for the inspection, maintenance, and troubleshooting of mechanical systems across the mining infrastructure.

This includes raw and potable water systems, pumping systems, and associated plant installations. The role ensures all equipment operates safely, reliably, and efficiently in compliance with Mincom regulatory requirements and AngloGold Ashanti Ghana (AGAG) standards, while minimizing downtime and supporting continuous mining operations.

 

ROLE ACCOUNTABILITIES

Safety

  • Conduct risk assessments prior to task execution.
  • Participate in workplace inspections and safety observations.
  • Report hazards and incidents and ensure corrective actions are implemented.
  • Comply with all safety regulations and procedures.

Environment

  • Comply with the Environmental Management Plan.
  • Prevent spillages and environmental contamination.
  • Report environmental incidents and deviations.
  • Follow environmental procedures during operations.

People

  • Work closely with supervisors, operators, and contractors.
  • Participate in training and continuous improvement initiatives.

Work Execution

  • Perform inspections, lubrication, and preventive maintenance on raw and potable water pumps.
  • Support shutdown maintenance and repair activities.
  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on raw and potable water pipeline systems.
  • Identify and repair leaks, burst pipes, joint failures, and corroded pipes.
  • Replace defective valves, gaskets, fittings, and pipe sections.
  • Conduct routine inspections on dams, storage tanks, and distribution pipelines.
  • Fabricate, assemble, and install pipelines including HDPE, PVC, Yellomine, and steel pipes.
  • Complete work orders and provide feedback on planning systems.
  • Report equipment defects and contribute to Root Cause Analysis (RCA).
  • Support condition monitoring activities, including non-destructive testing (NDT), to improve system reliability.
  • Execute planned maintenance tasks in line with approved maintenance schedules.

  • Execute work effectively to avoid rework and reduce waste.

Time

  • Ensure timely execution of maintenance and operational tasks.

Risk Management

  • Support operators to operate equipment within safe working limits.
  • Identify and escalate potential equipment failures.

Reporting and Authority

Reporting

  • Report all operational and maintenance issues to the Mechanical Supervisor.

Authority

  • Stop work or equipment operation if unsafe conditions exist.

 

ROLE REQUIREMENTS

Education & Qualification

  • Mechanical Technician I Certificate or equivalent, or
  • Associate degree or technical diploma in Engineering Technology or related field, or
  • City & Guilds Certificate Part I.

 

Knowledge & Skills

  • Minimum of 1–2 years’ experience in pipe fitting or a mechanical engineering field.
  • Experience in polyethylene (poly) welding is an added advantage.

Legal Requirements

  • Knowledge of Ghana Minerals and Mining (Health, Safety and Technical) Regulations is an added advatage

Technical Competencies

  • Pump and valve installation and maintenance.
  • Selection of appropriate pipe materials and joining techniques.
