The AGA Africa Business Unit is seeking experienced and self-motivated persons to join our Executive Team. ANGLOGOLD ASHANTI (IDUAPRIEM) LIMITED (A subsidiary of AngloGold Ashanti Limited) operate the combine Teberebie and Iduapriem open-pits gold mines at Tarkwa in the Western Region of Ghana and has a work force of over 1400, including contractors.

 

Role Context & Purpose

 

The Managing director of Iduapriem is accountable to the SVP: Africa Business Unit (ABU) for the delivery of the targeted gold production at the right production cost margin for Iduapriem Mine.  This will deliver the shareholder value that is required to grow Iduapriem consistently over the next period. The management of available cash flow and capital for further investment is a key accountability. The incumbent will Lead, manage and continuously improve the effectiveness of the specialist Mine Management Divisions and Support Functions, consistent with delivering maximum sustainable value of the assets to the Africa Business Unit yielding cost and productivity base improvements. The role is critical in enabling a culture of employee value and ensuring the resources and technologies are in place to move the company into a world-class facility where critical skills can be retained and the community sustained around it. 
 

 

Accountabilities

 

Safety 


•    Demonstrate behavior that is consistent with AngloGold Ashanti's (AGA)  Safety Vision and Values
•    Ensure all functions adhere to and implement AGA Safety Standards within Iduapriem Mine.

 

Strategic Management of Iduapriem 


•    Optimize Operational Effectiveness and Production Efficiencies in support of one-to-five-year Production Targets 
•    Design, implement, and maintain the Mining Blueprint Plan for Iduapriem Mine, ensuring AGA, ABU, and Ghana production, quality, and cost targets are met in the periods agreed with the Senior Vice President.
•    Ensure business surveys and measurement metrics are set in place to measure and monitor improving the environment as continuous improvement programs are rolled out over a 5-year period.  
•    Develop strategies for the Business Unit that will recognise changes in the country (i.e. political, social, legal, and commercial) to maintain and sustain a particular part of the operational competitiveness.
•    Develop the LOM plan options with the support of cross-functional resources that are made available in assuring a reliable and achievable production plan, thus positioning the mine for stability in current operations and growth potential for the future. 
•    Continuously improve the business, safeguarding the assets, and implementing new approaches that result in best practices among the peer group within the industry. 
•    Ensure competent resources at the right level to provide scientific, professional, and technical best practices in achieving production targets at the required quality and cost per ounces, over a longer period of time, ensuring a new and improved future state of operational excellence for Iduapriem.
•    Implement an integrated project ONE in Iduapriem, creating structures and facilities to enable the sustainable change of Management and Business systems and Engagement behavior for the Mine

 

Sustainability, Stakeholder Engagement & Communication


•    Integrate and control the design and implementation of several systems across internal and external aspects of Iduapriem with a special focus on the Environmental and Community Development Programs, in conjunction with the Vice Presidents for Sustainability, HSE and Transformation to achieve a unique Ghana footprint for the company.
•    Alignment to Country Operating Frameworks as developed and designed by Ghana Exco/Management team.
•    Provide support to the VP Sustainability as and when required in support of relevant Environmental and Community Development Programs.
•    Engage internal & external stakeholders on business-related matters working within Corporate and Regional stakeholder engagement & communication standards, guidelines, and strategies. 
•    Ensure all measures are taken to secure and maintain the licenses to operate within the timeframes required by legislation in all jurisdictions in which Iduapriem has current and future interests.
•    Deal with internal and external stakeholders, contractors, and specialists to ensure the latest global and regional benchmarks are taken into consideration, enabling Iduapriem to operate “ahead of the curve” in terms of standards and procedures. 

 

Risk Management


•    Accountable for the identification and management of operational risks and issues on the plant, as per the global and the local OHSE Legislative frameworks. 
•    Identify and prioritize all operational risks and liabilities and monitor the implementation and effectiveness of risk and liability mitigation action plans.
 

Planning & Budget


•    Ensure the development of improved mine budget planning system or framework, in conjunction with Finance, to demonstrate efficiency and effectiveness in achieving business performance objectives.
•    Analyse monthly variance reports from all departments, identifying potential areas for improvement, low hanging fruits in optimisation of cost and operations. 
•    Understand where cost savings will come from and identify opportunities for changes to the way the company plans to achieve its promised objectives. 
•    Analyse business performance and profitability margin cost drivers and endeavour to always improve the margin, analysing environmental aspects’ impact on the ability of the company to produce more at higher margin.

 

Reporting, Monitoring & Evaluation


•    Provide direct output to the Senior Vice President of Africa in ensuring that all Business Unit monthly and quarterly board reporting is aligned with standards, guidelines, and schedules.  
•    Monitor and evaluate Business Unit reporting for executive decision-making and internal/external information sharing.  
•    Preparation of Africa Business Unit  reports to the Operations division, pertaining to trends and improvement of capital projects, leadership systems, processes, systems, frameworks, and the implications thereof. 
•    Preparation of reports to FAP Project pertaining to identified opportunities for optimization.

 

People


•    Create and validate the Leadership Pipeline of Iduapriem, understanding Ghana, ABU and AGA Global career opportunities to ensure the retention of critical company/business unit skills.  Ensure a company-wide Talent and Succession Program is implemented and maintained for all critical roles in the Mine, ensuring the competent resources to deliver on business results at all levels of the organization. Ensure implementation of localisation plan in line with Talent and Succession planning programme at level III and above.
•    Coach and provide thought leadership to Iduapriem Management Teams pertaining to strategic planning and operational achievement of business goals, in support of Ghana, ABU and AGA strategic objectives. 
•    Ensure a culture of performance excellence, operational standards and a participative decision-making culture is established in Iduapriem, giving specific attention to Employee Value Propositions, making it an Employer of Choice for the future generations in Ghana.
•    Ensure competent resources at the right level are recruited and people are continuously developed, to provide best practices in achieving production targets at required quality and cost per ounces, over a longer period of time.
•    Ensure a culture of performance excellence and the setting of operational standards are achieved. 
•    Develop, support, and lead strategies that enhance Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity (IDE) in support of Ghana, ABU and AGA strategic IDE objectives.

 

Contractor Management


•    Develop Contracting Models to ensure the right parts of the work is outsourced, or that the correct Contractors are considered by Heads of Departments, when they need to make their choices. 
•    Ensure a culture of Contractor Management exists where Managers do not delegate the control of contractors to their staff and that Contractors must report formally, monthly, against their cost and promised service delivery.
 


Person Specification

  • Post Graduate Degree in Engineering, Mining and/or Business Management.
  • 10 – 15 years’ experience in business management with at least 5 years in an Executive capacity.
  • Experience/exposure in managing a complex external multi-stakeholder engagement (Government – national, regional, Municipal levels, Traditional Leadership at all levels, Regulatory Agencies and Authorities, Civil Society Organizations, media, etc.)
  • 3 - 5 years relevant practical experience, or extensive in, and knowledge of, stakeholder engagement practices especially in the mining industry 
  • Proven practical experience in Management, resettlement, and compensations.
