AngloGold Ashanti (Ghana) Limited, Obuasi Gold Mine is currently near completion of the redevelopment phase to become a modern, efficient and long-term profitable operation. The underground mining operation has been fully mechanized and designed to produce up to an average maximum of 5,000 t/day of ore mined.

ROLE PURPOSE

 

The Mechanical Maintenance Superintendent- KMS is accountable for and plays a crucial role in ensuring the mine's mechanical systems are safe, efficient, and reliable in the following areas of operation.

  • Underground Dewatering pumps operations and service water management, maintenance, overhauls, monitoring, and control of all dewatering infrastructure
  • Maintenance and efficient operation of the KMS Material(ore/waste) handling System and infrastructure to ensure high equipment availability, maintainability, and reliability.
  • Surface Maintenance Workshop activities, mobile air compressors, fridge Plant and mobile fleet maintenance where necessary
  • Structural Steel Fabrication & Construction Workshop activities and will be responsible for all major welding and fabrication works on the mine.

 

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Assess risks for all tasks and ensure they are controlled before and during task execution.
  • Report all incidents and ensure they have been investigated and corrective actions completed on time.
  • Act on all corrective actions assigned to you or under your jurisdiction and ensure timely completion.
  • Enforce rigorous safety standards across all mechanical operations, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and company safety policies.
  • Conduct regular risk assessments and audits, implementing corrective actions to mitigate potential hazards.
  • Ensure the safety and compliance of structural installations, coordinating with engineering teams for precision and safety
  • Accountable for team’s environmental obligations and performances.
  • Conduct formal meetings with team and report any weaknesses in the environmental procedures.
  • Enforce all environmental work procedures that have been issued by the Departmental Manager.
  • Investigate all environmental incidents in assigned work areas and prepare reports with recommendations for the Departmental Manager for onward submission to the Environmental Manager or his representative.
  • Develop and manage dewatering strategies to ensure the mine remains dry and operational.
  • Oversee the maintenance, operation, and installation of pumps and drainage systems, ensuring their functionality and addressing any potential flooding risks.
  • Supervise the operation and maintenance of crushers and conveyor systems, ensuring they run efficiently and meet production requirements.
  • Coordinate preventive and corrective maintenance schedules for handling systems to maximize equipment uptime.

 

  • Oversee structural steel fabrication for mining support structures, ensuring quality standards and structural integrity.
  • Manage the underground maintenance workshop, including the scheduling of repairs, part replacements, and the availability of spare parts.
  • Supervise maintenance staff, ensuring they are well-trained in equipment repairs, safety protocols, and troubleshooting techniques.
  • Oversee the design, installation, and maintenance of compressed air systems, ensuring they meet the mine’s operational needs.
  • Monitor the compressed air system's performance and address any inefficiencies or pressure drops that could impact underground operations.
  • Lead and develop a team of mechanics, technicians, and support staff, providing training on equipment use, safety practices, and emergency response protocols.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, safety, and continuous improvement within the mechanical team.
  • Coordinate with procurement to manage inventory levels for critical spare parts and supplies to support mechanical operations.
  • Maintain efficient use of resources and control costs without compromising equipment availability or operational quality.
  • Track performance metrics for each system (dewatering, materials handling, compressed air, etc.) and prepare reports for management.
  • Identify and implement improvements to increase system efficiency, reduce maintenance costs, and extend equipment life.

 

 

 

QUALIFICATION, EXPERIENCE AND TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES

 

Qualification:

  • Minimum of BSc. / BTech in Mechanical or Maintenance engineering or equivalent.
  • Financial, commercial and project management through work experience and courses.

 

Experience:

  • Minimum of Seven (7) years of demonstrated professional operational experience in underground mining dewatering operation and service water management/maintenance, Materials handling system- Conveyors and crushers, maintenance workshop and compressed air management.

 

Technical Competencies

  • Experience of Maintenance and Repair Contracts (MARC).
  • Verifiable experience in shutdown planning for underground mining operations and Support Infrastructure maintenance.
  • Experience in Project Management
  • Knowledge of SAP PM module.
